The city is responsible for the cost and management of waste generated in the U.S. An average American can throw away five pounds of trash in a day to without thinking of the possible outcomes or where the trash would be taken. This number is surprising as it indicates that Americans are contributing to the environmental issues the country is facing. Despite the recycling programs put in place, much of it still ends up in the trash due to contamination. Environmental waste management is one of the cost affecting landfills and waste to energy facilities. This is a result of sitting wastes that later decompose and produce methane. Which has been proven to be quite harmful to the climate. Burning plastics and other waste also produces harmful chemicals such as mercury and lead, which are released into the atmosphere. This creates a bigger environmental problem that contributes to climate change. Another cost is the financial cost that is brought by, trying to control and minimize the cost in shipping waste to the landfill space. There is enough extra waste therefore finding more landfill spaces is becoming difficult especially since other dumping sites are raising their cost. The biggest threat to clean up the recycling stream is that National Waste & Recycling Association claims that, at least twenty five percent of what ends up in the recycle bin is usually contaminated. With no possible outlets for our trash, Americans are left to employ people to sort through the trash and clean it up. Most Americans are being encouraged to spend less and cut cost in order to reduce an increase in waste production. Hence some cities came up with the four “R’s” of recycling. They are, reduce, reuse, recycle and refuse. This was brought about in order to encourage people to make better choices when doing their shopping and avoid disposable goods. Despite all these efforts, recycling is still facing hurdles such as getting rid of plastic. Plastic is difficult to recycle due to the material they are made out of, which are weak and fragile substances that are not reusable. Creating awareness for caring for the environment would help improve the situation. Ensuring that people are informed and understand the importance of the environment, as well as the climate, would help save the planet from the disaster that awaits us in the near future.
