Promoters of the death penalty argue that for justice to be served, those convicted of heinous crimes of murders must be sentenced to death. This means that society must not impose a lesser loss than the criminals imposed on their victims. Therefore, imposing the death penalty ensures that justice is served for all. My position is that the death penalty is not a good idea. This because we have a moral duty to protect human life ad not take it. Since its inception, I do not think that capital punishment has been instrumental in achieving the greatest balance of good over evil (Barry, 2018) . Instead, the death penalty is used in an unfair and unjust manger against citizens to promote racism, arbitrary application, and how much money an individual has to influence the use of capital punishment on an individual. In addition, capital punishment does not promote public safety (Barry, 2018) . Given the value that is placed on human life on both national and international laws, I believe that a less severe alternative that can achieve the same goal should be established.

I believe that two wrongs do not make a right and the death penalty does not deter crime or protect the public from killers who may strike again if capital punishment is not administered. For murderers, life imprisonment without parole can achieve the goal of keeping them away so that they do not take another life (Barry, 2018) . In terms of cost, it is much cheaper to imprison a murderer for life tan apply the death penalty. In addition, capital punishment has been found to cheapen the value of life. This is because capital punishment by the state legitimizes the taking of life and should be stopped by all means.

Lastly, the death penalty is a failed policy. This is because more than a third of all death penalty prosecutions in the United States have been found to be flawed and required re-adjudication, especially when it comes to race.
