Disease oriented medical model burdens patients. When a patient wants to get medical services, they have travel to meet the healthcare providers or request for a day off at their workplaces. These patients do not get adequate time to interact with doctors or other healthcare practitioners since the doctors have to go through many appointments. Also, the patients are exposed to a complicate health care system that they must navigate. The sick have to go through complicate rules of insurance and billing processes. The activities that occur in the disease-oriented medical model frustrates medical practitioners since they cannot deliver comprehensive care to patients. It is, therefore, crucial for a health care provider to shift from disease-oriented model to disease prevention and health promotion model, for it allows health practitioners to communicate and create awareness about different ailments.

Disease prevention and health promotion model addresses social factors that determine health and risky practices that can be modified (Rural Health Information Hub, 2020). Social factors affecting health include political, economic, and cultural conditions. The unsafe practices that can be modified through this model include poor eating habits, usage of tobacco, and other risky behaviors that may predispose an individual to chronic illnesses. Health promotion and disease prevention involve communicating with people by raising awareness about healthy lifestyles (Coe & de Beyer, 2014). Also, the model allows the medical practitioner to educate people on how they can change their behaviors. It enables the creation of a comfortable environment where people can adopt healthy choices.
