One element of poetry is sound. This includes rhyme, rhythm, onomatopoeia, and alliteration and they take advantage of the spoken nature of poetry. For example, “for if we fall, we find it fair that we fare on” uses alliteration where the consonant f is repeated. Alliteration is often used to create rhythm or emphasize certain words (Magher 2019).

Another element of poetry is imagery. This aims at painting a picture in the reader’s mind by exploiting the five senses. These elements are often known to trigger the senses and are not limited to sight only. “She felt like the trees nodded in agreement.” This is an example of visual imagery. It tries to appeal to the sense of sight (Stuva 2019).

Form is another element of poetry. It refers to the general outlook of a poem. An example is the length of lines. Simply put, form refers to the structure of stanzas within a poem. The form of a poem is often dictated by the rules governing the length of a line, and sometimes we may find a line ending without a period.

Density is the fourth element of a poem. Density refers to the quantity of words said in the available space. It is what brings the difference between the normal prose writing and poetry. The denser the poem, the richer it is. Some of the elements that can be used to improve on the density of poems include metaphors, allusions, and connotations (Goss98).

The fifth element of poetry is words. This includes the use of figurative language in poetry to pass across or emphasize the main message in the poem. An example is use of similes, hyperboles and idioms. Figures of speech enrich a poem and prevent it from being plain and boring (Donovan 2017). Example is “she was a deer” to mean she was fast.
