Leadership as a topic has been sufficiently discussed in the bible, with Psalms 23 being one of the most famous illustrations of leadership affecting the modern world (McCormick & Davenport, 2003). The chapter stresses the Lord being the shepherd and knowing where His sheep are at all times. In a symbolic approach, the verse depicts God as the shepherd and human beings as she sheep. The illustration is applied to modern businesses to explore the various needs of the employees that the organizational leaders have to strive to meet and how they do it (McCormick & Davenport, 2003). The imagery of the leader as a shepherd has given meaning to the need of them to attend to the needs of their workers gently. One of the needs of the employees is, therefore, clear from the image of the leader as a shepherd: the need to receive guidance (McCormick & Davenport, 2003). A shepherd is often leading his or her sheep to the greener pastures. According to Parfyonova et al. (2019), the employees of today's businesses require the guidance of their leaders to ensure that their productivity is maximized.
The parable of the lost sheep in the new testament of the bible has provided an insight into the importance of teamwork as a need to the employees in the twenty-first century (McCormick & Davenport, 2003). As a shepherd leaves the entire flock to search for one sheep, today's leaders have come up with contemporary ways to ensure that all the workers are on the same page on a particular issue ( Parfyonova et al., 2019) . The other need of the employees is protection at the workplace, which is catered for by ensuring a safe and enabling working environment (McCormick & Davenport, 2003). In the same way, a shepherd protects his flock from the external attacks to ensure that the animals have a proper environment as they feed.
