I chose to discuss ethics in nursing. The ethical system can prepare me as a nurse to care for patients from other cultures by being able to define what is expected of me in terms of right or wrong. The American Nurses Association Code of Ethics, for example, provides nursing ethical principles that nurses are expected to abide with. Ethics and ethical nursing practice are incorporated in every aspect of nursing care, including providing care to culturally diverse patients (Grace, 2017). The ethical principles that will guide my practice are justice, beneficence, nonmaleficence, accountability, fidelity, autonomy, and veracity (Grace, 2017). Justice refers to being fair, and a nurse should be fair when distributing care among patients. This principle will guide me in giving care in a fair, just, and equal manner to patients from different cultures. Beneficence implies doing the right thing for patients, and nonmaleficence involves preventing harm, whether intended or unintended. Being accountable means that I should be responsible for my professional and individual actions as a nurse. The principle of fidelity will ensure that I remain faithful to my professional promises and duties by offering safe and high-quality care to all patients regardless of their cultural background in a way that is competent. Autonomy as an ethical principle will help in ensuring that I accept each patient as a unique individual who has the right to opinion, beliefs, and values. At the same time, veracity will provide a foundation for being truthful to my patients. All the above described ethical principles in the ethical nursing system will prepare me to care for people from other cultures in an ethical and right way.
