Terrorism is mostly driven by political, economic, and religious factors. The main purpose of terrorism is to produce terror, hence achieve an aim that could be political, religious or even economic ( Schmid, 2005). While some individuals are forced to join terrorist groups, a majority are driven by personal needs that can easily be fulfilled through extremism.
One of the purposes of terrorism is it is used as a means of achieving economic gains. While some individuals are forcefully used as suicide bombers, some are paid a large amount of money to cause or perpetuate terrorism. Most importantly, in some waring regions, families of individuals directly or indirectly involved in terrorist undertakings are compensated . The fulfillment of political causes and religious ideologies are other reasons behind terrorism. The concept of Jihad is sometimes used by terrorist groups to influence radicalization (bi Laden, 2015) . The purpose of terrorism in such cases are a need to fight a religious war. An example is the initial terrorist undertakings by Boko Haram in the name of Islam purification in Northern Nigeria. Besides religion, the achievement of political influence is sometimes a major purpose. An example is ISIS, whose Jihad related reasons to pursue terrorism have been complemented by the need to have political control over the region they mainly operate in.
Karrada bombing, the Baga massacre, and Yazidi communities bombings are some of the major events in modern terrorism. The extent of destruction in the Baga massacre is one of the reasons that make it significant. Boko Haram, the perpetrators, did not only manage to overrun a military base with a multinational taskforce but were also able to kill approximately more than 2000 people. Metrojet Flight 9268 is another significant terrorist event, especially because of how it occurred. It is believed that a bomb was planted in a plane before it occurred. It is also one of the deadliest air-related terrorist attacks in Egypt. Lastly, the Yazidi communities’ bombings were among the most fatal car bombings in Iraq. Seven hundred ninety-six people were killed, and more than 1500 people wounded. Although there is no terrorist group that claimed responsibility, it later became clear that Al-Qaeda was responsible ( bi Laden, 2015).
