Sustainability is a critical concept surrounding urban development. It ensures that the urban areas are more ecologically based and livable. Several aspects of the city need to be looked into to create a definite plan for sustainable outcomes. Developing an eco-city necessitates closer checks at the transport and urban annexes in the city development plans. This paper discusses the various aspects of sustainable development in The Folks, Winnipeg. The city’s public realm needs to be of high quality as well as having appropriate design principles that are essential to urban development. 

Sustainable transport is one critical aspect that is considered by The Folks. Kenworthy (2006) confirmed that providence of transport systems possesses a key role in influencing the built environment and the quality of life of the people. The Forks, Winnipeg aims at improving the people’s quality of life by allowing the region where moving around and about either by bike, on foot or transit is secure, convenient and accessible. The transportation around The Folks and its environs are aimed to balanced and sustainable. It should be dynamically integrated with the use of land use; infrastructure that is well-maintained and suitable for Winnipeg conditions; and transportation that supports active, accessible and healthy lifestyle options.

The Forks has working waste management and diversion system. That is influential in managing the collection, monitoring, transportation, and the disposal of the garbage and recyclable materials with the region (Kenworthy, 2006). The system has evolved from a residential recycling program to a more complex system that ensures a clean environment that is healthy, admirable and worth a better standard of living. Also, there has been a considerable reduction in the residential waste by approximately 23% and an increase in recycling by 31 percent. 

The Folks has most diverse culinary destinations. It offers a variety of eclectic dining combinations for whatever pocketbook or palate. It is situated at locations that are serene with amicable sites for tourist attractions. Further, it has stellar scenery with views of the rivers present alongside the several restaurants and a number of the city’s best patios. The Folks defines the spot for them that desire exclusive enjoyment and urban living experience. The construction of the beautiful scenery with almost every social amenity is a desire for most of the city dwellers (Childers et al., 2015). The Forks place, therefore, presents a quality public realm and by extension expresses the public culture, society and aspects of good governance. The public realm entails every aspect of the transit system and environment. 

The aesthetic beauty and efficiency of the physical structures cannot go unmentioned. The Johnston terminal, the Folks Market, the Prairie garden just to mention but a few form some of the particular points at the joint. The urban design and the physical structure of the region are highly permeable, robust, vibrant, visually appropriate and more personalized for human needs. Their area is appropriately demarcated to give easy access to one’s destination (Childers et al., 2015). 

The region has set up Lots of economic activities which cover a multitude of sectors or departments. That is a clear indication of empowerment and employment to the vast majority of the urban dwellers (Kenworthy, 2006). Innovative ideas, creativity and uniqueness have enhanced the economic growth of the region. Further, the social quality of the areas public environment has encouraged and attracted more investors to the city. That results in spurring the economic growth. 

A close study of The Folks, Winnipeg provides a show of a place that is exclusively well planned. In real essence, the ideas utilized in this area are sustainability founded and integrates economic, social, cultural and environmental concerns coupled with transit-oriented, compact and urban form principles.

At the center of The Folks is Prairie Garden which remains a vibrant tribute to Winnipeg prairie roots. A peaceful walk through a naturally occurring wild garden that blooms with several different plant species indicates close to 150 native species of plants (Corporation, 2018). That incorporates 38 prairie plants, for instance, prairie crocus, bergamot, and wild columbine among others. Environmental conservation is a crucial aspect of urban sustainability. The prairie gardens also, serve to boost the economy of the region through being a tourist attraction site. 

The Johnston Terminal is well built and appealing structure in the region. It is home to a variety of specialized boutiques, and stores, offices, pubs, cafe and an old spaghetti factory. It houses a restaurant that is large, comfortable and locally popular and contains an outdoor patio (Corporation, 2018).  

In conclusion, it can be censoriously summarized that urban sustainability is a critical concept that should efficiently be worked on when doing urban development and planning issues. The Folks is a representation of a sustainable environment with all the necessary amenities to support the large percentage of the growing population. Quality of urban life are influenced by various aspects including and not limited to transport, economic growth, environmental conservation, and quality infrastructure.
