The idea of effectively working in teams is as central to industry success as that of effective leadership. A positive, collective outcome emanates from having a pool of candidates with great attributes (Silvia, 2018). The laying of a great foundation by finding the right people is vital because they affect how they relate and work with one another (Silvia, 2018). The paper highlights four team player styles, which are contributor, collaborator, communicator, and challenger.

Contributor

The contributor team player style is for individuals who provide practical information to other team members. Usually, they limit the information to the current undertaking. These players aim to enlighten other members to achieve task goals, in the best way possible. Different ways they contribute in teams include doing the back-lifting tasks, acquiring needed background information, offering useful presentations, and advising others (Denhardt et al., 2020). For example, if a client intended to penetrate a new demographic market with a skincare product, a contributor will identify opinions from the market about what they need. Besides, they will give a presentation on how the company can create a product that bridges that gap.

Collaborator

The collaborator is an individual who continually reinforces members around achieving the set goals. He envisions each role as paramount and is often assisting with tasks outside of his job description. They always have the desired result in mind and can often illustrate a mind map of how every role contributes to its attainment. In many cases, they help the team create strategic goals and break them into manageable steps. An example is a client experience associate who assists the marketing department in organizing their brochures before an outreach program.

Communicator

An individual in the communicator role of a team player facilitates the operations of the undertaking of the team. They may even be referred to as the backbone of the group, or the thing that makes it work. The primary responsibilities of communicators are the maintenance of a pleasant working environment and regarding every member and their contributions as essential. They achieve this by actively listening, sharing with members, and offering their thoughts respectfully. They are the ones who will notice when a member is out of sync and explore mediation techniques (Denhardt et al., 2020). An example of a communicator action is when an individual chairs a brainstorming session, encourages silent members to give their opinion and then offers encouragement by using terms such as, 'that's a unique perspective.'

Challenger

The challenger is an individual who is always questioning things that are already set in their way. They do not do it blindly either and are eager to provide alternatives to the procedure, thinking, or implementation. Refer to the example of a skincare company penetrating a new demographic market. The marketing lead's set strategy is to price the product lower than other competitors in the market. A challenger on that team might suggest that adding an indigenous product revered by the targeted demographic to the ingredients of the product is a better strategy.

Conclusion

Each of the identified roles is critical for the functionality of a team and to achieve peak performance. Individuals who understand the usefulness of functional groups take time out and put in resources to nurture them. Moreover, they will emphasize the need for respectful discussions, and useful feedback to attain set goals.
