The Functionalist theory of Davis and Moore is the most relevant when it comes to stratification. It states that social stratification is a necessary part of society. By accepting that differences in social standing are an important part of society, then the individuals in society can embrace their role in society.

The two collections of photographs examined show the differences in wealth distribution, culture and power. The collection on “what the world eats” brings out the disparity in income. For instance, a family of four from France can afford to consume a variety of foods at a cost of a sum of $419 per week. This variety can allow them to consume a balanced diet that including fresh fruits and vegetables (TIME Staff, 2016). This can be compared to a family of 15 adults and children from Mali who only consumes food worth $26.4 a week.

From the photographs displayed, the amount of food consumed may lack variety such as animal protein and vegetables. The amount of money spent on food shows that income and education is a great determinant to healthy living. The breakdown is a direct result of stratification as it gives the rich more options while the poorer accept their position of lack.

The collection on favorite toys is similar in the same regard. The children from developed nations have a greater chance of more variety because they have an access to more resources. On the other hand, children from less affluent nations are limited to one basic toy that may be second hand or a hand me down from an older sibling or relative. Such scenarios from affluent nations show that the child may not get access to what they want. Instead, they only get access to what their parents/caregiver can afford (Piper, 2019). On the contrary, children with more resources get toys that reflect their interests. The functionalist theory plays out by depicting on how the affluent choose their path while the less privileged are often forced to live with limitations. Despite this, both sets of people can still make their way through life.
