What does the phrase 'the greater good' mean to you? In my recent analysis of the Greater Good of the Electronic Health Systems (EHR) technology, I discovered key moral problems such as breaching privacy, confidentiality, and security of patient's information in pursuit of the greater good. The proper moral guidelines I proposed include regulating access, punishing unauthorized use, encrypting patient data, anti-virus installation, gaining patient consent, and requiring a two-step authentication. I also used the utilitarian approach to know that they would accept overriding the patient's privacy rights for social gain. While using the ethical egoist, I found that self-interest in addressing moral problems overweighs social gains as long as it does not pose harm to others.
I believe that the 'greater good' is used in situations where you can only gain either by harming or losing something that seems less important. Today, wrongdoing has become part of the human trait. I see institutions and leadership frameworks use the phrase 'for the greater good' whenever they bypass a select group's gains. I find that people navigate ethical dilemmas to modify their moral actions using 'the greater good' to shift their application between personal and communal ethics. Many people increasingly choose inhumane actions that deteriorate the moral standards of society. The outcome includes increased tolerance for unethical actions such as white-collar offenses, dishonest politicians, unethical workplace actions, and increased scientific data doctoring. My solution is on an individual basis. When faced with an ethical dilemma, act on a moral intent, acknowledge the simplicity of justifying dishonesty, and give new perspectives of others. I suggest that we battle the constraints against our nature to be selfish through addressing everyday ethical challenging on an individual level rather than focusing on abstract generalizations of moral decay.
