The Green Mile is a film about the Cold Mountain Correctional Facility. The film which was initially released in 1999 December in the USA was directed and produced by Frank Darabont. The film begins with Paul Edgecomb narrating to his companion Elaine why the movie Top Hat is emotional to him (Movie Collection, 2020). He tells her of the events that transpired when he was a prison officer in charge of the death row. Paul was introduced to John Coffey, a Black well-mannered, kind and mentally challenged inmate who was convicted for raping and killing two white girls (Movie Collection, 2020). Although he was a physically imposing man who was afraid of the dark, he had a supernatural gift that he used to cure Paul's bladder infection and the wife of the prison's chief warden. Paul and two fellow guards begin to wonder if he committed the crimes. John reveals his innocence to Paul and releases his powers to him. He explains that although he is innocent, he wants to die because the world is a cruel place (Movie Collection, 2020). He later dies after watching Top Hat as his final request and Paul and his fellow guard resign. The movie ends with Paul attending Elaine's funeral.
The film is filled with good parts but what I especially liked was how it was absorbing and emotional. A good example is when Paul offers to let John run away after realizing he was innocent, but John refuses saying that this death would be a form of kindness because he was tired of people being ugly and cruel to one another (Movie Collection, 2020). However, I believe that it could have been improved by paying attention to some facts that were overlooked. A good example would be ensuring the method of execution was by hanging since electrocution was introduced in Louisiana legislature in 1940 yet the film was set in 1935. I would rate the movie at 80% because the producer of the film focussed on the important aspects of the film. I like that the film was exceptionally long to not only allow us to feel the passage of time in prison and but also ensure the film progresses at a steady pace. The film does not feel rushed, and every section of the movie is well developed, thus the positive rating.
