Ever wondered why some organizations thrive and become more successful than others? The idea behind this great success mainly revolves around the structure of employees and the management and how they relate to each other. Employees, therefore, have a significant role in the success or failure of a firm. The Green Mountain camp might have initially failed due to lack of right relationships with its employees. Employees being the pillar and foundation of a firm, smart and strategic measures should be put in place to get the right workforce. Hackman and Oldham depict a very appropriate model, where they use the notion of tasks being the key to employee’s motivation. The repetitive and tedious task only diminish the motivation level of employees in the workplaces. They state that a job is defined by five core characteristics which are: skill variety, task identity, task significance, autonomy and feedback which in turn impact on knowledge of actual results and experienced responsibility for outcomes. This knowledge about job influences the issues like job satisfaction and motivation in workplaces leading to high productivity. To redesign the camp staff using this model would require one to put in mind every core.

First, since a variety of skills exist, it would be very wise to match the ability at hand with its rightful task. The employees must feel the meaningfulness of work when performing a given function. For example, if a recruited employee is highly skillful and passionate in cooking it would be very unwise to assign him/her to tasks that do not exploit his /her strength, hence would be appropriate to assign the role of a chef to him/her.

Secondly, by use of task identity core, employees could be assigned to specific tasks, making the end outcome whole. There is a task that definitely requires more than a single person’s effort and therefore should be identified and more employees assigned to them. An example is swimming instructors since there is always some new learners needing to learn.

Third, task significance plays also a significant role in an employee’s motivation. Employees would be much motivated if they were doing something that contributes to the society or organization at large. Employees, especially in Green Mountain Camp, would be very much motivated seeing that the overall success of the camp is a result of their efforts and that they put smiles to faces of the campers.

Fourth, use of autonomy core where the task is delegated to employees to their lowest levels to create independence thereby giving them a sense of responsibility. This makes them motivated as they are responsible for whatever outcomes comes of their tasks.

Lastly, feedback is a potent tool to relations between employees and the management. The existence of an open feedback structure would motivate employees to ridicule and highlight how changes in the camp might impact on it positively.

Randall and Nick’s idea of getting employees by their motivation factors was so genius and understood them better staffs but finding ways of full filing their needs would keep them. They should be able to fill the needs of employees by recognizing their efforts and rewarding them appropriately. For example, employees of the year should be well appreciated. Job insecurity, supervision, work policies, and salary dissatisfy the employees if not managed well and are referred to as hygiene factors compared to motivators such as achievement and increased responsibility. As laid out in Maslow’s hierarchy of needs, humans tend to fulfill their requirements up to the authority. Therefore, Randall should help this employee accomplish their need such as those at the physiological level by providing appropriate salaries and allowances. As a result, this will keep them more motivated as they strive to acquire more high order needs such as safety sociability.

Empowerment is the granting of independence and autonomy to the employees. This would widely impact on the success of the camp. Granting freedom to employees would motivate them to work to their very best which would give the camp a positive image due to well-committed employees. This would, in turn, bring campers to get the same experience making the camp thrive to greater heights. Campers would enjoy their stay in the field, and negative compliment would be minimal.
