'The Hidden Reasons for Poverty' film by Gary Haugen, a civil rights lawyer, is a true reflection of the current systems in the world. Specifically, Haugen addresses the issue of poverty from an ethical point of view. The bottom line of his argument is that poverty exists in our society today due to the failure of compassion. Gary adds that where compassion fails to apply, violence prevails. He argues using Venus' case being thrown out of her house and land grabbed by her neighbor after the death of her husband to show ruthless actions of violence which later manifests into poverty. Moreover, this video addresses poverty in the context of broken law within the court systems and law enforcement units such as police (Haugen, 2015). For example, he cites a case of a woman attacked, dials 911 emergency number but hardly gets any help since it is a weekend which is presumed a non-working day for the police force.

He only cites poverty as a product of criminal injustice where criminals who walk convicted free is a male who sexually assault and attack women in their homesteads. The speaker addresses ethical issues revolving around corruption, institutional negligence, exploitation of the poor by the rich, and rape. Institutional indifference and exploitation of the poor are manifested through non-functional laws and institutions that only focus on the rich who can offer money and look down upon the poor (Haugen, 2015). For example, Gary argues that the rich buy security which makes them more teacher whereas the poor remain unprotected and keep falling on the ground. Society as well is full of social injustices such as rape. Surprisingly, perpetrators of such immoral acts go convicted free showing a corrupt society by the greedy police force and corrupt judicial systems. Ideally, world poverty is directly linked to moral and ethical implications. Poverty is a system of failed ethics and life guiding principles leading to social evils such as corruption, robbery, rape, violence, and biased institutions.
I am in total agreement with the speaker's point of view. Practically, world systems have failed, leading to human suffering and pain. For example, the police unit is corrupt and continually oppresses the poor whom they should otherwise protect. Secondly, corruption as a global problem kills development agendas and visions that could otherwise help to leverage human suffering (Haugen, 2015). For example, corruption is a product of unequal distribution of resources, leading to poor access roads, underdeveloped social amenities such as hospitals, poor drainage, malnutrition, and other vices.
