The historical-critical method is a method of textual analysis that is based on a collection of a number of approaches. In the paper the book of Luke Chapter 2 will be assessed to identify areas where the assumptions of this application have been applied.

The main and only assumption of this approach is objectivity. Objectivity has been identified as being necessary for the understanding of texts, and it should be adopted because it is not only desirable and leads to better interpretations, it also allows one to come up to an understanding that others will also be in line with. One element of objectivity is being guided by facts. Sine facts cannot be changed; it becomes possible for others to develop an understanding of the same facts. Luke’s second chapter talks of the birth of Jesus. Objective context of the registration ordered by the Caesar (Verse 1) and this being a historical event, other people reading the text will agree with this fact. It is, therefore, a point of view that will be acceptable by all people.

The significance of the birth of Jesus is another area where objectivity has been put into place. Luke’s work has been observed to portray two aspects of the birth of Christ that would give an adequate understanding of Jesus’ significance to the world. Fitzmyer’s commentary looks into this significance highlighted by Jesus having an earthly background, that is, him being the firstborn of Mary. This objective aspect of looking into Jesus is important because in his life some looked at him as a mortal human. The second part highlighted the significance of Jesus as the Messiah where Luke looks at Him as the son of God attributed to the lineage of David. This address by Fitzmyer is an essential aspect of subjectivity because it addresses the critical role of Jesus in the bible as believing Christians.
