There is a correlation between the economic development of a country and the occurrence of war in that particular country. War negatively affects all aspects of the economic development of a country as most of the less developed countries in the world have been reported to have experienced a series of wars. For instance the guerrilla war in which Colombia was the epicenter of the war. Wars also lead to the destruction of infrastructures such as industries which adversely affects the economy. In Colombia, war lead to the destruction of the oil pipes which negatively affected the oil industry’s leading to a decline in the output (Week 4 notes). Further, the Colombian government spent a substantial amount of money repairing the destroyed infrastructure and also financing the war which increased the government spending therefore affecting the economy (President Juan Manuel Santos., 2018). Wars also decrease the work force of a country which reduces the output of the country economically. It also leads to the destruction of industries and other infrastructures that the countries at war possess (week 4 notes). The conflict that occurred in Colombia between 1958 and 2013 led to the death of a lot of people that reduced the people who could work in the industries. The government also paid a huge amount of money in paying ransoms for its citizens who were held captive as a result of the war (Berger & Weber.2009, pg 7).War also led to a decrease in the investment in Colombia because the investors had to commit a big amount of their money in security due to the presence of the armed conflict in the country (President Juan Manuel Santos., 2018).
Peace and development
Peace is important for the economic development of any country. The peace in Colombia will enable the reconstruction of the infrastructure such as roads and industries which were destroyed as a result of war (Thang, 2000, pg 25). The citizens of Colombia will also be able to be employed in the industries that will be reconstructed. The government will also be able to rebuild its agriculture sector and the huge sum of money that was used in war will be redirected to other sectors of the economy (President Juan Manuel Santos, 2018).
