Informatics is a nursing field that combines knowledgeable input from information science, computer science, and nursing science. Nurses use informatics to manage data, communicate information, and spread wisdom and knowledge in the healthcare environment. Informatics is essential in the contemporary nursing context because it promotes technology to provide quality patient care. Additionally, informatics is a vital aspect of the nursing field because it enhances the protection of confidential patient data. Therefore, informatics is essential in the nursing environment for the reasons highlighted above.
A real-life example of why informatics is essential is when analyzing medication errors. Perhaps a clinic realizes it has excessive medication errors requiring urgent remediation. Using nursing science knowledge, the healthcare institution will hold a meeting and request all in-attendance nurses to document instances where they experienced challenges recommending appropriate medication for a patient. The clinic will use information science to analyze medication error trends using statistical computations, such as standard deviations, mean, mode, or median. The average rates of medication errors in a day will also be evaluated using information science and the outcome presented to a board or nurse head ( Lee, 2014) . The board or nurse head will create an action course, and the discussed implementations documented and stored electronically. All nurses will be mandated by the board to review decided measures to reduce medication errors by accessing the hospital’s online website or portal. In the above example, the clinic has used informatics to reduce medication errors by integrating nursing, computer, and information sciences.
Delegate your assignment to our experts and they will do the rest.
I want to learn how informatics can improve research outcomes and enhance patient care, aside from reducing medication errors. I also want to analyze how the federal and state governments can standardize nursing care protocols using informatics. Further, I am interested in learning how informatics can investigate patient preferences, clinical investments, and infection rates. Therefore, I want to learn informatics for mentioned reasons.
