The study of living organisms and life is what constitutes Biology. The people who take up Biology are referred to as Biologists. Biology is taught in almost all countries across the globe. However, most of the students will drop the subject and opt to choose other careers not related to Biology. Very few will learn Biology and become professional Biologists. However, regardless of whether one takes up a career in Biology or not, the subject is of importance to the larger society. There is a need to recognize that Biology is an essential course undertaken by many students, and this can be supported by increasing funding.

Studying biology allows an individual to have an awareness of plants, how they grow, and how to raise animals to ensure there is a production of maximum output using minimal inputs. One of the greatest scientific achievements is providing nourishments to billions of people. Whether it is through the introduction of new nutrient or selective breeding of new crops, studying biology has tremendously helped in improving the availability of food on a global scale. The study of biology has opened up new possibilities for nutrition, agriculture, and other crucial sectors within the food industry. The transfers of genes between plants took generations many years ago; however, through studying biology, better gene transfer processes have been developed, such as DNA recombination. Through studying Biology, people have been able to come up with new means of modifying crop genes and make them resistant to drought, pests, and diseases. These activities have played a significant role in increasing yields and reducing plant spoilage. With an increasing global population and shrinking arable land, there is a need to come up with other means through which global food security shall be maintained. There is a need to introduce better plant traits that will increase food production, and this is supported by studying various Biology branches, including gene cross-breeding and molecular biology.

The study of biology has allowed people to have an understanding of human biology. Through having an awareness of the human body, people will know how it works and how they can keep themselves healthy. Before the study of human biology, global mortality was quite high. Without studying biology, it would not have been easier to invent medications and study how it affects the human body. However, for scientists and health care professionals to have the ability to come up with effective medicines, they must have studied and carefully understood the biology of viruses and bacteria. This enables them to come up with medications that have been able to save millions of lives. Likewise, pathology has allowed scientists to develop vaccines that are used to offer immune against deadly diseases, including polio, smallpox, HPV, malaria, among others. The development of proper nutrition requires one to have an awareness of various foods, and this knowledge is taught in biology. Adequate nutrition is vital towards better human health, while poor nutrition can lead to adverse effects. The study of biology provides plant biologists with knowledge on coming up with better diets as compared to that consumed more than a century ago. Biology helps one in understanding what food should be eaten and which is bad for the body. The study of biology has helped nutritionists, food technologists, and other biotechnologists in creating tailor-made diets that meet an individual’s specific needs. Additionally, Biology allows us to study human cells. Cells form the fundamental structures of living things. Human bodies have trillions of cells, and by learning about them in Biology, we can know how we can protect them from harmful effects and infections, treat the cells and cure diseases and how to prevent harming the cells because of our actions and choices

From the moment of one's birth, an infant will undergo various stages of growth and development. As babies grow, they will continue to develop many different features and capacities which will influence their future. However, it is always important that as a parent, one knows the sudden changes their children will pass through. Human development encompasses a lifelong phase of emotional, cognitive, behavioral, and physical transformation and growth. Enormous changes will take place from infanthood to childhood to adolescence to adulthood. However, for one to have an awareness of the various changes, studying biology is vital. Biology will give one the knowledge of specific markers associated with each stage of growth and development. In case the parent notices that a child has reached a certain age and some of the markers are not evident, one will definitely know something is not right and thus a need to consult a child development professional or doctor. The knowledge gained from biology about growth and development shall help parents in talking to their children about the various physical changes they might encounter once they attain puberty. A parent should emphasize these changes are natural, and it is a normal process towards adulthood.

Studying biology is a door to very many different careers, including various non-research areas such as public policy, science, communication, and teaching and research, including ecology and biomedicine. Studying biology in itself is a vast field, and it allows one to take up various careers. Some of the occupations are very important to society, including health care professionals, environmental conservationists, and medical researchers, among others. Almost all the careers related to Biology are essential for society and as compared to other subjects. Moreover, even beauty therapists and beauticians need to understand the biology basics as they deal with various human body features such as nails, fingers, and skin. Without having these basic biology concepts, they cannot fully offer their cosmetic services.

Biology is not only concerned about plants and animals. Biology revolves around the environment that all living things live in and how they interact with it. Learning about the environment enables us to utilize the natural resources and ensure we have minimal impacts on the environment. By understanding how the ecosystem works, we can look for more friendly means of carrying out various activities. The earth has continued to face increased rates of degradation and global warming as a result of human activities. Through ecology, human beings can determine the affiliation between the environment, plants, and animals.

Studying Biology helps in bridging the gap between materialism and idealism arising from social sciences. Biology helps in bringing forth the contrast existing between the antiscientific idealistic viewpoints and scientific viewpoints on the origin of life. Biology enables one to understand the difference between living and non-living things and how organisms have been able to adapt to the environment, as seen in the case of evolutionary biology spearheaded by Charles Darwin. Some of the core biological themes related to human evolution include The Origin of Man. Students will understand how Biology explains and explores the complex interrelationships involving nature. Without Biology, people will not have understood the interconnected affiliation between the environment and organisms, and this makes it hard for them to comprehend the laws of nature and laws of science.

One of the essential skills I have mastered during this course is time management. Time management helps one in prioritizing tasks and accurately laying down a time table on when to accomplish them. The course required one to complete various course modules in a timely fashion and learn how to stick and manage a given schedule. Time management requires one to monitor your actions and efforts and be able to complete given assignments on time. The success of the course requires one to have effective time management skills. I was able to leave enough time to complete my reading assignments and gaining the amount of time that will be required in delivering and presenting quiz questions and test responses. From my online submission account, I was able to always provide my work as per the given date and time.

The course requires one to carry out a lot of research. Research equips one with additional knowledge about various issues. Research allows one to critically analyze multiple problems by using scientific methods. However, for one to carry out research, you need to look for a relevant problem and topic. Likewise, there is a need to formulate a hypothesis and even carry out an experiment. During the course, I was able to dig deep into various topics and come up with additional information that was shared by my classmates. Through research, I was able to clarify confusion about complicated facts and figures. I was able to understand the rationale for various topics. In the case of the coursework, it required one to carry our extensive research majorly for group projects. Without having begun to sharpen my research skills at the start of the course, I would have had the ability to deliver quality assignments.

An educator must ensure that they equip their students with the ability to identify and solve complex issues, effectively communicate and work as teams. Through the course, I was able to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills. This means that I was able to present evidence for any ideas and analyze my thinking ability. I ensured that I questioned the various facts taught by the lecturers. I did not only rely on what my lecturer told me. Critical thinking and problem-solving skills are vital for an uncertain future. Additionally, skills play a crucial role in improving my learning and flexibility skills. The critical thinking and problem-solving skills were evidenced from my course work as I was always able to think outside the box by providing solutions to problems from a new angle following thorough research.

Communication is a vital skill for a student to master. Throughout the course, I was able to improve my communication skills by using various apps and audiobooks. I read through and listened to the audiobooks and heard how certain words were pronounced. Likewise, communication involves other elements apart from speaking, such as listening. My listening to the lecturers helped in developing my communication skills. Active listening involves listening to understand what a lecturer is saying instead of focusing on irrelevant things. My communication skills were showcased during the course work through offered group presentations. Some of the coursework required one to work in groups of two and three and later present before the class. From every group that I was part of, we received high scores for our ability to present.

Additionally, I was able to develop my teamwork and team-building skills. By working in small groups, I was able to manage the work allocated and deliver it on time. I did not have any form of argument with my group members throughout the course. This enabled my groups to present our work always on time.
