The Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) is a federal body linked to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) mandated with the task of administering major healthcare programs in the country. Notably, the federal government requires health care organizations to comply with accreditation, certification, and licensure requirements, as documented by the CMS reforms ( Kronstadt, 2016) . To this end, accreditation, certification, as well as licensure, play an important role in a CMS healthcare organization to ensure that hospitals meet the relevant requirements not only at the state level but also at the federal levels. Accreditation, certification, and licensure are also essential since they are significant in maintaining quality, improving quality, and ensuring public safety in hospitals. Based on the necessity of CMS, this paper seeks to identify two accrediting bodies that best suit Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida, and recommend the ideal accrediting body for the hospital.

The Healthcare Facility Accreditation Program (HFAP) and the Joint Commission are the two major accreditation organizations in the U.S. that best fit Jackson Memorial Hospital. The latter is an independent non-profit body that approves health care organizations as well as health programs in the United States. The organization’s accreditation program has accredited almost 82% of the hospitals across the U.S. ( Howell, Jacob & Mok, 2019). In essence, the body takes into consideration all state legislation and regulations regarding hospitals for their accreditation and certification measures. Noteworthy, the Joint Commission mission statement emphasizes continuous improvements in the public health care system by championing for collaboration with stakeholders and evaluating health care providers. In addition, the mission calls for health care organizations to continually provide safe and quality care for all (The Joint Commission, 2010). On the other hand, the Healthcare Facility Accreditation Program (HFAP) is an accrediting body recognized by the federal and state governments as well as insurance providers (HFAP, n.d.). The body was established in 1943 and started its operations two years later. Notably, HFAP reviews hospital services to ensure that they comply with Medicare standards. In addition, HFAP conducts accreditation assessments for Primary Stroke Centers. The mission of HFAP is to disseminate excellent patient care while guaranteeing safety through the application of renowned health care standards (HFAP, n.d.). Both HFAP and the Joint Commission target almost all states across the United States, including Miami, Florida, and California. The HFAP standards comply with the CMS Conditions of Participation (CoPs). Moreover, the organization has structured its standards based on patient care, quality enhancement, as well as the safety of both patients and environment (HFAP, n.d.). Likewise, the Joint Commission standards also comply with CoPs set by the federal regulations. The standards concentrate on important patient, individual or residential care, as well as organizational functions that are ideal in warranting safety and quality care ( Baker, 2017). The accreditation procedure always guarantees that the accredited facility meets these standard requirements.

Jackson Memorial Hospital's main objective is to provide the best care for all by demonstrating compassion, accountability, respect, and professionalism (Jackson, n.d.). Noteworthy, the hospital can achieve its objectives by liaising with the Joint Commission since the commission’s standards focus on improving patient care by monitoring organizational functions. Moreover, the organization’s mission provides a robust background that calls for Jackson Memorial Hospital to consider the Joint Commission accreditation services. Ideally, the hospital is in a better position to meet the standard requirements needed by the Joint Commission for accreditation than that of HFAP. Therefore, between the two-accreditation bodies identified in the paper, the Joint Commission is the ideal accreditation body that best fits Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Florida.
