President Obama nominated Merrick Garland to fill the position of the vacant supreme court position after the death of Justice Antonin. While the president has a constitutional authority to nominate a Supreme Court Justice, this nominee and nomination were declared null by Mitch McConnell, the senate's majority leader (Elving, 2018). This ignorance of the nomination may have occurred because a democratic president had made an appointment while there was a Republican majority. The blockade of McConnell’s nomination not only prevented the seating of a Democrat’s president choice but was also structured as motivation for conservative voters in the nearing election.
Contrastingly, Mitch McConnell is now focused on ensuring that Trump’s Supreme Justice Nomination, Amy Coney Barret, is confirmed. Following the death of Ruth Ginsberg, President Trump proposed the nomination with the belief that it is important to fill the seat before the next election (Liptak & Stolberg, 2020). This change in opinion from McConnell’s seems to support the seating of a Republican’s president choice while also further motivating the re-election of President Trump in the coming election. Hence, the decision to confirm the nomination seems to be politically motivated.

I do not think that President Trump should have made a nomination so close to the election. Nominations for Supreme Court Justice should be entirely based on a consideration of the further development of the American justice system. Hence, as his term is almost over, the nomination should be made by the next president that will be elected. Moreover, President Trump’s nominee should not be confirmed so close to the presidential election. This confirmation will only facilitate the capability of senate majorities to confirm or object nominations based on political interests. Hence, the nomination of the next Supreme justice should wait until the next election.
