Wu et al. (2016) carried out an analysis on the experiences of compassion fatigue, burnout, and satisfaction of oncology nurses. The research was conducted on the basis of the participants’ responses. The authors interpreted reactions of the participants based on my observations. Research Design
The authors utilized three research designs in the study which include quantitative, non-experimental and descriptive methods. The illustrative method was used to analyze the relationships between the variables of the study (Munhall, 2012) . The variables of the study include compassion satisfaction; burnout and compassion fatigue (Wu et al., 2016). The quantitative method is used to examine the relationship between variables (Munhall, 2012) . The researchers used the quantitative approach to analyze the relationship between the variable and the statistical relationship between the two variables (Wu et al., 2016). The non-experimental research design was used to predict compassion satisfaction using two predictor variables which include nurse oncology and patient (Wu et al., 2016). The research designs were appropriate in analyzing the variable and predicting the outcomes of the interventions.
Sample
The sample of the study consisted of 486 Americans and 63 Canadians (Wu et al., 2016). The sample comprised a total of 549 practicing oncology nurses (Wu et al., 2016). The sample size of the Americans was adequate for the study which facilitated useful results and findings. The researchers could have added a significant population of the Canadians to analyze the data effectively. The results and conclusions could be biased due to the imbalance in the sample population. Most of the respondents came from the United States which creates a gap in the population of the study. The population size of the Americans is approximately eight times that of Canadians. The authors could have experienced difficulties in establishing the differences between the experiences in compassion fatigue, burnout, and satisfaction of nurses in Canada and the United States.
Data Collection Methods
Stacey Wu was responsible for collecting the data. The researchers used two data collection methods which include professional quality of life scale and demographic questionnaires (Wu et al., 2016). The demographic questionnaires were administered through fluid online surveys (Wu et al., 2016). The respondents to the online survey were from the CANO (Canadian Association of Nursing Oncology) and Oncology Nursing Group (Wu et al., 2016). The researchers used the Chi-square examinations to analyze the relationship between the work-related elements and burnout and satisfaction and compassion fatigue (Wu et al., 2016). The researchers examined compassion fatigue of the nurses using the double-scales of burnout and subsidiary stress (Wu et al., 2016). The respondents were informed of the research before Stacey carried out the data collection exercise (Wu et al., 2016). The respondents did not mention their names in the survey for privacy and confidentiality (Wu et al., 2016). The data collected was used for purposes of research (Wu et al., 2016). The respondents were given adequate time to answer the questionnaires (Wu et al., 2016).
Limitations of the Study
The first limitation of the study is that the Canadian sample population was not adequate to give evidence on the experiences of the nurses (Wu et al., 2016). The American population is eight times the sample of Canadian nurses. The male population in the sample was lower than the female population. The men also suffer from compassion fatigue and burnout (Wu et al., 2016). The male population is essential in analyzing the experiences of the nurses. The study lacks age gaps in the sample. The study does not have age gaps to enhance the accuracy of the responses. Age is a significant element in the nursing practice. The researchers could have identified age gaps to relate with the sub-scales (Wu et al., 2016). It is essential to list the limitation to identify the gaps in the study. The identification of constraints assists in determining the areas that should be improved.
Findings of the Study
The demographic elements of American and Canadian nurses were similar. The American and Canadian population indicated that comparable states of compassion fatigue, burnout and compassion satisfaction (Wu et al., 2016). The researchers found that the attitude of teamwork in the workplace setting was significant in the American and Canadian population (Wu et al., 2016). There is a substantial relationship between the three subscales which include subsidiary stress, compassion satisfaction and burnout (Wu et al., 2016). The findings partly answered the research question. The results did not adequately address the research question due to the gap in the American and Canadian population. The results are credible because the data was collected from actual respondents. The data analysis instruments have enhanced the credibility of the study.
Summary
The research aimed to analyze the work-related experiences among the nurses in Canada and America. The researchers used the research design to meet the conditions of the study including predicting compassion satisfaction and examining the primary variables. The research findings partly answered the research questions due to the difference in the study population. The research has substantial evidence that can prompt changes in the nursing practice and changes in the hospitals. The healthcare institutions should create policies and improve the intervention methods to develop the performance of the nurses.
