The loss of the modern community is one of the problems that have faced modern-day sociologists, especially due to the wide acceptance that came with this phenomenon. The concept of the state has been the focus of the community since the post-war period, thereby leading to an increased concentration on the state rather than the individual and the community. This paper summarizes chapter seven, discussing the loss of the community.

The loss of the community has been a focus of sociology since the 1950s with authors such as Robert Nisbert writing about it. The book argues on the loss of the community and its basic make-ups due to the increasing power of the state in daily affairs of the people. As a result, it is no longer possible to actively and effectively engage tools of community such as the family, the church, the guild and the neighborhood as it was previously. This effectively renders the ability of the community to function powerless, thereby corroding the concept of community. The resulting situation – with the passage of time and change of generation – is the loss of the community.

The loss of the community can lead to various adverse effects on the people themselves. The loss of the concept of community among members of the society allows for the higher dependency on the state. This opens a door for the government to embrace more totalitarianism views to take root, thereby promoting statism practices. In conclusion, this book looks to the views on the community at a time when communal life is fading and more charismatic leaders are being embraced.
