Gender socialization has been a significant aspect that shapes the development of both males and females. It is usually characterized by the differentiation of various roles that fall under specific categories. I came to recognize the aspect of gender socialization when I learned about the roles that belong to both men and women. Education and peer groups were significant in aiding my realization of gender socialization. This is because they consider gender socialization as an essential factor that shapes the way society views both male and female. My perspective on gender socialization is that it is concentrated on attitudes and behaviors that fit specific sex. In the process, girls and boys each learn to uphold the already set norm by society. Thus gender socialization is primarily determined by the cultural, economic, and societal values of a respective society.
Sexual attitudes and practices characterize gender identity. This is a factor that has created the difference ranging from one society to the other. Thus, gender identity can be influenced by gender norms set out in different communities. During my first days in high school, I encountered a situation that gender identity was vital in settling. The principal required that students cooperate to dig some holes for the planting of trees. Our class consisted of both girls and boys. At that time, I considered that we were all equal and would share any responsibility as a class. The principal had, however, another idea. He suggested that boys would dig the holes while girls would plant the trees. He went on to say that boys were masculine than girls, and thus, they fitted the task. This scenario helped me to acknowledge the aspect of my gender identity. I recognized that, in most instances, gender identity is accorded more with the outward appearance of personality.
