The Love Song of J. Alfred Prufrock is a remarkable poem by T.S. Eliot that provides a break with the tradition of the 19 th century. The poet presents the despair as well as passivity of a middle aged man known as Prufrock. Although he is in love, his love song is not sung, and he has to meditate so much and cowardice becomes the Achilles’ heel. The problem of whether he should tell the lady that he loves her continually haunts him. The poem deals with emotional frustration, despair, as well as human hollowness.
While the title of the poem raises the expectation of the reader to hear how a lover expresses his love, the poem fails to praise love. The title creates irony because love is not sung. Therefore, the title is an irony of what was expected but never occurred. The poem investigates the disturbed consciousness of an educated, powerful, but emotionally artificial modern man. Prufrock addresses a lover with whom he would wish to consummate relationship, but lacks the courage to approach.

The music that represents the reading is We Found Love by Rihanna featuring artist Calvin Harris. In this song, Rihanna appears to be portraying a love relationship where two people are in love but they are not good for one another. The two have found love which is hopeless, because they cannot be together. The lady has to choose between life and love. Although she feels she needs love more than life, she has to turn love away because she is aware that life is the only correct choice (Rihanna, 2011). The lady no longer thinks with her heart but with her mind which enables her to do what is right for her. Hopeless may mean many things, but this love is doomed from the onset.
