One of the main challenges likely to be faced in the future in the process of production is the inadequacy of resources needed for a huge food supply. Sustainable food production has brought new ways of production of additional food using less land, and energy. However, Ravindran and Jaiswal (2016) assert that the global demand for food has increased because of the increase in the world population. Also, the prices of food have increased due to the continued variation in the food supply, thereby leading to high levels of starvation ( Altieri, 2018). Nevertheless, there are various factors that affect the ability of sustainability for areas, such as water, land, and energy, which are naturally limited. According to Verma (2015), the global land area available for the growth of food per person reduced from 1.3 to 0.72 hectares between 1967 and 2007. It is unlikely that additional land will be available for food production in the future. Therefore, future systems should address the issue of land as a limited resource. Therefore, this paper outlines a land restoration proposal for an abandoned piece of land to change it into a sustainable food production facility. To have a thriving ecosystem that will support the region’s natural systems and productive land for a long-term sustainable food supply. To help to reclaim the contaminated land and restore it for a healthy diversity of the stripped natural vegetation, soil erosion, and polluted water. To change the land into a sustainable food production facility by designing various solutions. The abandoned piece of land has indefinite pollution, depleted natural vegetation, the presence of soil erosion, and a polluted river. Loss of the restored land to development projects other than agricultural production. Bio-security risks. 

Characteristics that will enable the Land to Provide a Long-Term Sustainable Supply of Food 

The farmers will use organic agricultural systems such as crop rotations, animal manures, crop remains, legumes, and green fertilizers to maintain soil fertility. There will be alternative approaches to pest control such as bio-control agents, and cultural approaches to pest control. The farmers will use biological farming methods. Agriculture will be labor and knowledge-intensive and will use a complex system that will incorporate the recycling processes. The farming process will effectively use ground, rain, river, sea, and sewage water. The process will use modern agricultural systems for greater generic vulnerability. The farmers will produce value-added goods from the accessible agricultural biomass to boost income and ensure good nutritional and consumer acceptance properties.

Steps and Actions to Develop the Characteristics 

Mapping the land and describing its current condition. Describing its history using old aerial photographs, original land survey records, oral histories, and economic land surveys. Developing a hypothesis on how the original land was used. Developing goals for each unit of the management by assigning the potential of the unit for reinstatement and stipulating its anticipated future condition. Developing and implementing a plan to accomplish its goals by identifying tasks, specifying methods, and estimating material cost and labor for the management unit. Designing and monitoring a program to evaluate the success of the restoration. Implementing the program. Preparing reports to explain the project and describe the results. Periodic evaluation of the program by incorporating new ideas into the plan, revisiting the goals, and modifying and rescheduling tasks. Communicating and educating interested parties to equip them with basic information and understanding of how the project is intended to work.
