According to Mayo Clinic (2019a), the Mayo Clinic’s focus is on clinical research, education, and practice. Presently, the organization employees close to 58400 allied health and administrative staff as well as an approximated 4500 physicians, the same literature indicates. The organizational practice at the Mayo Clinic focuses on the treatment of difficult conditions through destination medicine and tertiary care. The staff at the organization are concerned primarily with promoting an environment in which the health of patients drives the commitment of employees.

According to Mayo Clinic (2019a) the mission of the Mayo Clinic is to inspire hope and bolster the health and wellbeing of populations through the provision of the best type of care to each of the patients through an integrated clinical research, education, and practice. 

Job Descriptions and Specifications at the Mayo Clinic 

The Mayo Clinic has specific criteria of job descriptions and specifications. Precisely, the jobs are listed according to the cities where professionals are needed, and they are categorized into administrative, Business, and Finance, Clinical Labs Research, Office and Administrative Support. Internships and Summer Opportunities, Information Technologies and Engineering, Surgical Services, Nursing, Other Patient Care, Advanced Practitioner, Support Services, and others (Mayo Clinic, 2019b). While most support staff are not necessarily required to have advanced qualifications for them to work at the institution, the Mayo Clinic emphasizes the need for its staff to be reputed professionals. As the latter literature suggests, the organization thrives on a culture of professionalism and high-qaulity service delivery, which is founded on the ability to hire, retain, and train the best professionals in specific fields of employment.

Coupled with the fact that the organization provides clinical services alongside research and clinical education, the management recognizes and promotes the need for effective training of staff to meet the mission and vision statements of the institution. 

Recruitment, Selection and Retention of Employees at the Mayo Clinic 

As do most of the organizations in its industry and others, the Mayo Clinic operates on the principle of equality in its employee selection processes. First, vacancies are continuously advertised across promotion media, including the corporate website of the organization, its social media pages, regular news outlets, such as magazines, newspapers, and the visual media in the US and across the world. The organization fights discriminative employment policies, such as subjective hiring of workers based on their race, gender, nationality, and other aspects that are outlawed in the US (Mayo Clinic, 2019b). Workers are selected based on how best they match the job descriptions and specifications for which they apply following a thorough vetting processes by concerned boards and panels. Lastly, the company applies its benefits scheme in ensuring that it retains the best talents since the practices make the organization one of the best in terms of employee satisfaction and commitment to working. 

Health and Safety of the Employees at the Mayo Clinic 

The Mayo Clinic operates on a culture of safety, which is underpinned by six major factors. First, all stakeholders are required to support activities and cultures that will promote safety and wellbeing. The latter literature indicates further that at the Mayo Clinic, everyone is aware of the cultures of justice, blamelessness, objectivity, transparency, and flattened hierarchy, which ensure that everyone feels safe and welcome to work with the organization as opposed to subjecting others to harsh treatment. 

Strength and Weakness of the Mayo Clinic 

As analyzed, the primary strength of the Mayo Clinic is the fact that it operates on cultures that promote the wellbeing of employees, including their safety, compensation and benefits, and equality at the workplace. As Tutuncu and Kozak (2017) note, this culture improves employee job satisfaction and productivity. However, while the company is neutral in its treatment of job applications, the widely diverse approach to employing makes it difficult to secure professional job positions with the organization.
