For the initial post, I select two historical events: Texas's independence and the Mexican war of 1846-1848. From the selection, I consider the Mexican war as the most impactful historical event on the Westward Expansion during 1800-1848. One of the main reasons the event was quite impactful is that it allowed the United States to fulfill its 'Manifest Destiny' to stretch its territory over the North American continent (Corbett et al., 2017). Furthermore, the war significantly changed the debate on slavery. After the war, the United States' size almost doubled, polarizing Americans into Northerners and the Southerners. The diffraction also sparked a discussion on what the two sides would do with the newly acquired land. The treaty of Guadalupe-Hidalgo significantly reduced the size of Mexico, and this had long-term effects on both nations (Corbett et al., 2017). Since the war had expanded the United States' size towards the pacific, the country gained lots of minerals, ports, and other natural resources that it needed for its growth.
The manifest destiny ideology had substantial impacts on both the Mexican War and Texas's independence. Concerning the war, the ideology of manifest destiny greatly impacted the United States in particular. The ideology was the main reason that motivated America's expeditious expansion towards the west. The ideology also helped spearhead the increase in the western settlements that saw the eviction of Native Americans out of the US. The ideology of manifest destiny also had a considerable impact on the independence of Texas. The ideology led to the annexation and expansion of Texas. Furthermore, the doctrine saw Texas's merger with the US making it the 28 th state in 1845 (Isenberg et al., 2017). The union did happen after Americans living in Texas felt that they were not comfortable with the Mexican laws that banned slavery.
