One of the prominent arguments in the chapter is that people should be allowed to have body autonomy. People usually talk about morality when in fact they obstruct others from exercising their sexual desires. In essence, they subject them to their own sexual standards. For example, the practice of female genital mutilation in Africa and some Asian countries, according to the proponents, reduces sexual desires among women. However, the women who undergo such practices often have problems during delivery. It is usually a painful moment, and the people, especially men, who encourage it, do not understand how the women feel.

The second argument is that the morality of sexual activities needs to be measured by the consequences. For example, although some conservative people are opposed to same-sex marriages, there are usually no significant undesirable consequences when homosexuals practice their sexual desires. The same conservative people oppose sex education in schools, suggesting that if it is allowed, it could encourage immorality among young people. However, when sex education is not conducted, young people still engage in unprotected sexual intercourse, causing unwanted pregnancies, and even being infected with sexually transmitted diseases. Evidently, it is very crucial for people to evaluate the consequences of different decisions especially in relation to sexuality before judging the morality of it.

Initially, I also thought sex education in schools encourages ‘immorality’ among teenagers. However, after reading the arguments in the chapter, I now realize sex education in schools is necessary. Presently, teenagers are exposed to a lot of media content, and pornographic materials can be obtained easily on the internet. These teenagers will inevitably try to satisfy their sexual desires. If sex education is not taught, they are likely to engage in irresponsible sexual activities. It is important for them to be taught how to use protection as well as the consequences of their actions.
