On November 5 th , 2019, Harris County will cast their votes for various referendums and offices. Besides the referendum, residents of Harris County will cast their votes for Controller, city Council, and Mayor. The election is scheduled to start early in the morning of the November 5 th (Scherer, 2019). There is a total of 52 centers in Harris County and they will open from 7 a.m. till late evening 7 p.m. on Saturday (Scherer, 2019). On Sunday, voting will start at 1 p.m. till 6 p.m. The entire schedule exercise will last from October 28 to November 1 st .

The Mayors’ position will attract the most attention as it draws 12 candidates. The incumbent, Sylvester Turner who is defending his second four term against Bill King and Tony Buzbee. The two are both businessmen and attorneys. Others eying the post of Mayor are Dwight Boykins who is a current Council and Sue Lovell, a former Councilwoman ( Wilson, 2020) . The post of mayor is drawing the greatest attention due to the County’s thorny issues that have dominated and formed part of the campaign. Other candidates eying the mayor include Roy J. Vasquez, Johnny “J.T” Taylor, Demetria Smith, Victoria Romero, Naoufal Houjami, Derrick Broze, and Kendall Baker. Some of the thorny issues that have divided the campaign and led to a high number of candidates include the long-range transportation system, various proposed projects and about 1o constitutional amendments ( DiMento, 2019) . Another special election is that of House Democrat Jessica Farrar who had previously stepped aside.

According to Scherer (2019) about fifteen candidates are gunning for the district that on many occasions in the past elections have voted overwhelmingly for Democrats. The political battle between Democrats and Republicans is also pushing the tension and attention of the locals ( DiMento, 2019) . Democrats have always had an easy ride, but with the revamped Republican Party from the Federal level, the ride may not be smooth as before. Republicans are determined to wrestle some of the district seats from Democrats.

Harris Voters

As at the end of 2018, Harris had a total of 2,357,199 registered voters. Of these figures about 52 percent voted in 2018. The percentage represents approximately 1,219,209 voters (Poll Locations and Ballots, n.d). During the November 5 th election, the number of voters likely to vote will go up due to the various controversial issues facing the County ( Wilson, 2020) . Thus, approximately over 65 percent of the residents will vote with a plus or minus 5 percent margin. The increase will majorly be attributed to increased awareness created among the youth who will add up the percentage. Over the years, youth’s participation in Harris elections has been low.

Interesting Races

Firstly, Democrats will hold onto the district. According to recent polls, Democrats are up by over 40 percent ( Stonecash, 2018) . They will take up the district easily due to their consistent and steadfast policies on constitutional reforms and development. Despite the heightened tension among the three frontrunners for the seat of the Mayor, the Incumbent, Sylvester Turner will retain his seat due to his promise of a progressive push in his second term ( Eby, Stevens & Contributor, 2019) . Mr. Turner has maintained a clean slate over his past management of Harris resources and promises increased attention on establishing a socially viable and strong county.
