As the world was getting into a new millennium, the United General Assembly adopted new goals to get over the human challenges. Notably, the millennium development goals (MDGs) were targeted to improve the lives of poor people and eradicate hunger. Primarily, these goals and targets reflected on the need to ensure the expansion of essential human development for people globally by the year 2015. In other words, through their focus on human deprivation, the millennium development helped set the standards of the world whereby growth was driven by both the rich and poor.

The MDG to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger was attained because worldwide, the number of people living in great poverty dropped by more than half, decreasing from 1.9 billion in 1990 to 836 million in 2015 (UN News Centre, 2015). The highest progress was evident since 2000. In 1990, approximately fifty percent of the populace in developing nations survived on less than $1.25 per day. However, as of 2015, the fraction had dropped to fourteen percent. Similarly, the official development aid from industrialized nations grew by sixty-six percent in real terms from 2000 and 2014 (UN News Centre, 2015).

Similarly, the number of those living on more than $4 per day, that is, those in the employed middle class, almost tripled from 1991 to 2015. Nevertheless, in 1991, the group made only eighteen percent of the entire population, but increased to fifty percent in 2015. Furthermore, the MDG to eliminate extreme poverty and hunger was achieved because the proportion of malnourished individuals in developing nations dropped by virtually fifty percent ever since 1990 from 23.3% in 1990 – 1992 to 12.9% in 2014 – 2016.

As such, the MDG to eradicate extreme poverty and hunger was attained because worldwide, the number of people living in great poverty dropped. Also, the development aid from industrialized nations grew. Lastly, the proportion of malnourished individuals in the developing nations dropped.
