Bachelor of Science in Nursing is very important to anyone practicing in this field because it has more advantages when compared to an associate degree or diploma in nursing. Some career paths in nursing are only available to those who are BSN-prepared. According to the NurseJournal.org (2018), these advanced practice professionals such as nurse midwife, clinical nurse specialist, nurse anesthetist, and nurse practitioner can only be studied by a nurse who has undergone the BSN studies. BSN also make it easier to go for graduate education, unlike associate degree or diploma where the nurse will have to repeat some classes first. Therefore, setting BSN as required entry point to do a doctorate is important in standardizing the nursing professional. To be in any leadership position, a nurse is expected to have at least an MSN degree. Therefore, having a BSN acts like a stepping stone into studying MSN degree which will put the nurse in a viable position to become a leader.

According to the NurseJournal.org (2018), hospitals are encouraging their AND nurses to go back to school and get their BSN. Despite this effort, some nurses do not feel it is a beneficial exertion because they do not wish to pursue an advanced degree. To overcome this resistance, nurses should be educated worldwide about research that continues to support the importance of BSN degree, and how it benefits both the nurses and their patients. There should be an increase in support from the federal government to prepare nurses at the BSN level and higher by providing all necessary programs. The hospitals should also offer incentive programs that will encourage nurses to advance their education.

Currently, there are different doctoral levels of nursing education that are being offered by different institution across the country. They include; Doctor of Science in Nursing (DSN) OR Doctor of Nursing Science (DNS) degree, the Doctor of Nursing Practice (DNP) degree, and Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in nursing. All these doctoral may not use the same curriculum and also cause confusion in determining the someone’s qualifications. The best doctoral that should be considered is the Ph.D. This because it is universally recognized when compared to other doctoral in the nursing education because the criteria and curriculum used is similar worldwide. Also, Ph.D. is a degree that concentrates more on research compared to other doctoral level of nursing.

Until the late 1800s, nursing education in the United States was similar to nursing education in England because, in both systems, there was no organized programs to educate nurses. Until recently, England only recruited white British females only of 18 years of age into nursing while in U.S nurses were recruited from a far more diverse group of ethnic background which included men, and was not age biased. Currently, about 10 percent of all nurses in the United States is comprised of men, and the nursing profession is continuing to be more diverse in terms of ethnic backgrounds.

According to Janet Scammell (2016) nursing as a profession has really devolved. Originally, modern nursing was focused on supporting modern medicine where nurses were featured as educated handmaidens of doctors. This ethos still somehow held sway in the 1970s based mainly on the textbooks used, and also, nursing schools were only taught by medical consultants and nurse tutors. The education level and focus in training nurses have shifted, and students now learn with other social and health care professionals where they are taught by research-active nursing and other academics in universities departments.
