Anyone might be a leader, but only a handful are great leaders. Climbing up the ladder of leadership regardless of whether it is through own business or corporate positions, is never easy. There are varied situations, emotions, good times, bad times, and disastrous times. However, a great leader leads his team to success regardless of the situation they are facing. For one to make a great leader, here are some main qualities that one should have. Honesty is a critical quality that defines a great leader. When dealing with a goal-oriented team of people, it is imperative to be truthful ( Collins, 2014). A company follows the actions and behaviors of its leader. Hence, it is crucial to set an example for the employees. Great leadership lies in believing in others and giving them the motivation to continue being productive (Silver & Nichols, 2015). A leader knows that he cannot do every task on his own, hence delegating tasks to others shows belief in their abilities and skills. My church pastor displays these qualities. Leadership is directly linked with the definition of being a pastor, "shepherds of God's people." Being a pastor comes with the responsibility to lead. Paul gave instructions to the shepherds (pastors) in Ephesus to "be on guard for the flock that the Holy Spirit has appointed you to look after, to Shepherd the Church of God." (Acts 20:28). In his message to Titus, he called the shepherds "God's administrators." (Titus 1:7). Apostle peter motivated the elders to "Look after God's flock among you, not looking after out of compulsion but freely…" (1 Peter 5:1-2). Both Paul and Peter have a secure connection between shepherding and looking after responsibility. Three variables define leadership, characteristics of a leader, characteristics of the followers, and situations influencing the leaders, and followers (DuBrin, 2015). A leader's effectiveness depends on his/her ability to relate to these variables and affects leadership style. When leading insecure and emotionally unstable people, autocratic leadership would be sufficient, and this is the opposite of secure and independent people. Vision is a core ingredient for any great leader. People love to be led by leaders who have a chief definite aim of what they want to accomplish. In America, the pursuit of the American dream drives people to choose what type of leader they want. Such is a leader who is considerate of all the diverse people who may exist in an organization (Kluegel & Smith, 2017). Thus a leader who harbors an interest in LGBT, people of color, and immigrants’ interest at heart would be regarded as an effective and inclusive leader.
