Throughout the course, I have learnt that the practice of nursing and healthcare is dynamic. Many people believe that the work of nurses is limited only to administering of medication as prescribed by physicians. In fact, the common misconception among many people is that nurses only play assistant roles to more qualified healthcare professionals. That perception is obviously false as demonstrated by the course. Rather, nurses are active participants in enhancing quality care, and take part in making crucial decisions. Secondly, nurses come into contact with patients most of the time and are consequently exposed to several experiences. Nurses work with the ageing population, people from different cultural backgrounds, as well as individuals with varying sexual desires, including homosexuals (Cho et al., 2018). When disasters happen, nurses take a central role in caring for the victims. Evidently, nursing is a field which is diverse that subsequently requires effective strategies to cope and foster quality healthcare.
I have learnt that the practice of nursing requires use of individual strategies as well as the participation of the community in enhancing healthcare. Individual strategies are mainly developed from research and experience in the field. Most importantly, nursing cannot foster quality healthcare if the community is sidelined. In fact, one of the roles of nurses is to develop intervention strategies to prevent the occurrence of some infections. That role necessitates nurses to work in collaboration with the community. Secondly, nurses also need to assess the needs of the community to be able to provide effective healthcare (Kulbok et al., 2012). The community definitely, cannot be assessed conclusively without nurses asking members of the community what they need. Regarding the course objectives, I have fulfilled all of them because I understand the importance of the participation of communities in community assessments and I have developed effective strategies to assess communities on their healthcare needs.
