Summary

The journal discusses the rise in obesity among children in the United States. According to their study, there has been an increase in overweight disorders among children for the last fourteen years. They found out that it is one of the epidemics challenging the health care providers and the government in controlling it. The authors classified the epidemic as class 1, 2, and 3. Class one overweight persons had a body mass index of over 30, grade 2 had a BMI of over 35, and class 3 levels had a BMI of over 40 (Skinner, Perrin, & Skelton, 2016). Their survey showed sex, race, social class, geographical areas, and others were some of the factors that influenced obesity in children. Nonetheless, the problem was found to be prevalent among the girls than boys, in Hispanic children than the natives, among the poor than in the upper social class individuals. They also assert that the policy efforts have not yielded any positive outcomes, and therefore, for long-term obesity improvement, healthcare providers need to implement new and intensive initiatives.

Reasons I chose the study

Overweight is an epidemic in the nation of the United States to the natives as well as to the migrants. The health condition causes adverse complications to the health of a person; thus, they need to rectify it at its early stage. Severe obesity is a contributing factor to most severe health disorders such as cardiovascular diseases, the development of diabetes, lung-related infections, mental health disorders, and many others. Additionally, extreme obesity could lead to heart failure resulting to death of an individual. Moreover, the condition has increased the costs incurred for medication. Further, the topic would enlighten the health care providers about the significant factors to consider when educating patients on how to prevent and control obesity.

What I learnt from the study

From this study, I have learned that the obesity epidemic is skyrocketing among the immigrants as well as native children in the U.S. There have been policies that have been put in place to control the disorder but are not yielding enough results. Therefore, the government and the health care system need to find some of the control measures to eradicate or reduce the problem among the children.
