In recent years, it has been in social media platforms and public discussion that drugs should become legalized and give people a chance to make personal decisions on whether to use or not. With many friends in college used to abusing substances and going through their posts in social media, I was for the support of the legalization of drugs. Considering that these abusing substances will not require to hide to use risky methods like sharing injections. It is at the moment that I decided to focus on Hobbes’s version of social contract theory to address the issue and its effects on society.
Hobbes’s social contract theory argues that some amount of individual liberty is necessary to give up for the sake of common security. The theory implies that individual liberty requires sacrifice to achieve common security. If every person is allowed to do whatever he wants all the time, humans would always be at war ( Waller, 2016) . For instance, every person must give up the right to steal other people’s property to enhance peace in the society. The Hobbes theory of social contract could not support the views I took on the issue. My views that drugs require legalization are contrary to the theory because allowing humans to use drugs willingly brings social disorder and a high rate of crime. Therefore, individuals’ denial of the right to substance abuse is good for the sake of the greater good.

The right to live is individual freedom that is compatible with the legitimate authority of the government. It is because, with life, living does not affect social security or the well-being of others as well as one does not go against the set rules in the society.
