The debate on the use of Plan B pill to prevent pregnancy after sex is based on its working. Most labels in morning after pills indicate that they work by preventing implantation of fertilized eggs on the uterus. The inconsistencies in research regarding how these pills work have kindled a fierce debate regarding contraception and abortion. The debate on whether to allow these pills to be sold over the counter has divided the public media for quite long eliciting controversies and emotional issues alike. This argumentative paper presents the pros and cons of taking plan B pills to prevent pregnancy in women. In supporting the use of Plan B pills, the paper presents argument that it works through other mechanisms such as delaying ovulation and release of the egg from the ovaries. There are also other several reasons to support the use of morning-after pills regardless of whether it works by preventing implantation of the fertilized egg on the womb. On against the use of these Pills, this easy will base its arguments on the fact that it prevents a fertilized egg from implanting on the womb. The paper concludes with personal opinions to explaining the best position with supporting facts.

The argument for taking Plan B pills

Most proponents of morning-after pills believe that they should not be abolished for several reasons. For those who believe that Plan B pills usage is tantamount to abortion, it is not scientifically clear on how the pills work to prevent pregnancy after sex. Scientific evidence has shown on several occasions that emergency pills contraceptive pills work by other mechanisms rather than preventing implantation of egg on the womb. However, as claimed by some of the leading scientists, these pills work by delaying ovulation, thickening cervical mucus to prevent swimming of the sperm, and delaying the release of eggs from the ovaries. Therefore, the pills prevent contact between an egg and sperm hence no fertilization takes place. This eliminates the concern by the pro-life organizations such as church groups and conservative politicians who believe that life begins at conception and use of emergency pills is purely abortion. Furthermore, the fact that these pills block the creation of fertilized eggs does not even meet the definition of abortion inducement drugs such as RU486, which destroys an embryo. On the contrary, any medication prescribed to terminate pregnancy destroys implanted embryos. It thus turns out that the heated debate over the use of emergency contraceptives is based on incorrect scientific guesses.

Secondly, the United States has people of different faiths and believes with varied views about life. For this reason, preventing the use of Plan B pills will breach their rights to access the pills which are against their faith and beliefs. This includes atheist, and for this case, those who believe that against their beliefs, they are at liberty to avoid using them but rather focus on other methods of family planning. It is wrong to push beliefs of a section of the population to the entire population. Furthermore, most proponents of emergency pills have argued that as adults, women must be allowed to make their choice on whether they want to get pregnant or not. Preventing women from doing whatever they want to do with their bodies is unconstitutional provided they do not interfere with other people’s life.

It is also worrying about the current century where many young girls are engaged in sexual activities. It is impossible to stop them and banning the use of pills will actually translate to millions of unwanted pregnancies. Rather than opposing the use of plan B pills, the focus should be directed at promoting responsibility by permitting the use of emergency pills. It is important to face the situation head-on rather than hiding our heads in the sand. It is also contended that, like anybody else, women make mistakes, and there is no need to let women suffer by running their body through unwanted pregnancy to give birth to a child they never prepared for. This is the reason morning-after pills were created, to avert the devastating effects of such mistakes. Women pass through significant health and well-being effects during pregnancy. Some would end up carrying abortion, while for others; the pregnancy forces them to drop out of school. Therefore, emergency pills protect women if the normal birth control methods fail.

Arguments against taking Plan B pills

The pro-life advocates are pushing hard for the redefinition of pregnancy to start at fertilization. Those behind the push are trying hard to convince women that they are not getting accurate facts about contraception. For opponents of emergency pills, the main arguments relate to how the pills work. The belief that fertilized egg is already a human being has spark debate from conservative politicians and religious groups over the use of Plan B pills to prevent pregnancy. They claim that preventing an already fertilized egg to implant on the womb is actually an abortion, and morally, this is equivalent to homicide. This is a major concern for people who believe that life begins at conception. Therefore, if it is true that a fertilized egg is blocked from embedding on the womb, then the pills actually aborts an egg only that babies are at different developmental stages.

The second argument is that allowing these pills to be sold over counter promotes irresponsible sexual behavior. It is important for a teenager to learn to be responsible and desist from engaging in immature sexual activities until they are mature and married. There are also adverse consequences of engaging in the irresponsible sexual behavior. Even if they are able to use pills to prevent pregnancy, there are several other STDs such as HIV/Aids. Therefore, allowing them easy access to Plan B pills, they will be exposing teenagers to the risk of STDs. The opponents have contended that every action has consequences and people must learn to leave with their mistakes. Generally, people make mistakes, but having a quick fix encourages one to repeat the same mistake. Therefore, by engaging in the irresponsible sexual behavior, women should allow the nature to take its course. It is further argued terminating a possible life is cruel. Imagine you were terminated in the same way, what would that have affected the people around you. It is better to live with pregnancy than terminate the life of future Einstein, Isack Newton, and Bill Gates.

Conclusion

The arguments supporting and against taking and selling Plan B pills over the counter are quite valid. The pro-life advocates believe that use of emergency pills amount to abortion. On the contrary, the proponents believe that morning-after pills can reduce the number of abortions and unwanted pregnancies. The debate is fueled by inconsistencies in research and FDA labeling on how these pills work. This has led to confusion that emergency pills prevent implantation of a fertilized egg. Studies have shown that emergency pills such as Plan B have no effects of the implantation. Therefore, the pills should be accessible to young women to prevent unwanted pregnancies should the normal contraceptives fail to works. However, responsible behavior should be encouraged among teenagers to prevent them from engaging in immature sexual activities and misuse of emergency contraceptives.
