It is true as asserted that the husband and the wife may both have dysfunctional personality types. The author offers a clear insight regarding how sexism can play a role in promoting domestic violence. While describing the victim-wife`s situation, Houston indicates that the woman`s personality leads her to “play a part in her own violence” (Houston, 2014). The author further elaborates by stating that the personalities of both the wife and husband play a role in triggering the violence because it is apparent that people select individuals who are responsive to their own individual neurotic needs.

Husbands who depict a violent personality are, therefore, highly likely to seek masochistic women. Male domination is a significant consideration for most relationships. This has the implication of men seeking women who they consider controllable. Besides, personalities are hypothesized to impact on stressful events that a couple is likely to experience. Personality types which are not adjustable are often connected to dysfunctional relationships.

Factors such as domestic violence are endorsed by the kind of personality that spouses possess. Abnormal personalities and dysfunctional relationships, therefore, play a major role in determining the occurrence of such incidences. In most cases, personality disorders end up being associated with recurrent forms of marital conflict such as intimate partner violence (Houston, 2014). More significantly, men depict borderline personality behaviors most closely associated with the manifestation of violence. Personalities are also linked to marital satisfaction. There is a great possibility for spouses experiencing repeated violence to remain in the same relationship while knowing too well that their partner is not bound to change. Finally, women are attracted to men bearing certain distinct personalities which keeps them confined to their relationship. Such a connection may be lethal since even if they are physically abused, they will still persevere hoping that their partners will change.
