Children need to be taught the importance of morals from an early age. Parents can guide their children through an exciting and picturesque book like Marcus Pfister’s The Rainbow Fish. Beautiful and admired in this world because of his shiny and multicolored scales, Rainbow Fish is satisfied and does not want to share her scales with anyone. When a small fish requests for one of his scales, rainbow fish declines as it is expected and gives the little fish a mean answer. The other fish in the ocean refuse to play with him because of his behavior. Now Starfish is his only friend. Rainbow Fish is disconcerted by his situation and asks for advice from Starfish who tells him to visit wise Octopus. Octopus’ solution is for Rainbow Fish to share his scales with his friends. Indeed he feels much happier than before after sharing all his scales except one.
Pfister’s vivid illustrations in this book give me flashes of memory about the first time I read the book at the age of six. The main reason why this book is one of my favorites is because of its role in initiating my love nature especially aquatic life. Clear illustrations of the Starfish and the Octopus in the book created in me the urge to see real fish. Relating to children, the flashy and glittering drawings as the pages go by helping to create a permanent mental picture in the child's mind. Use of artistic renderings also contributes to a child's creativity.

With a plot that is simple and easily understandable for children in grade one and two (Learningtogive.org, 2017), The Rainbow Fish is the perfect book for children to learn reading stories at an early age before graduating to longer novels. It not only provides moral lessons on sharing but is entertaining to the reader. This book also teaches children the importance of friendships (Lessons, 2017).
