The rape crisis center of central New Mexico was founded in 1973 by a group of students from New Mexico Law School. During the first years of its existence, it was a volunteer organization. However, as time went by, in 1979, it began to be funded by the University of New Mexico to run its programs. During that time, it was still known as ARCC, and in 2001 it became an independent organization after severing its formal relationship with UNM. Since then, funding for the center has been from several sources such as city government, federal, grant, state, individual donors, and private foundations. The rape crisis center aims to advocate for and support victims of sexual assault and their families and loved ones. The type of sexual assault commonly known is rape. However, it is broad and may encompass any other forms of sexual violence as well. It solves the problem of gender-based violence by focusing on sexual assault. It does this by educating the community, offering crisis services, and also offering to counsel (Westmarland & Alderson, 2013). Women have statistically been shown to be the victims of sexual assault more than men. It is useful in what it is doing because it is currently the leading force in creating a healthier and safer San Antonio. Due to this tremendous work, I would love to volunteer in the organization to offer education and counseling to the risk groups. ALIS foundation was founded in 1998 by people with disabilities in Finland. It was established to empower people with disabilities in developing countries. As a result, it works on gender-based violence since its main focus is on girls and women, and statistically, girls and women who are less empowered are more vulnerable to gender-based violence (Fricke, 2003). The foundation works towards achieving this by contributing to economic self-sufficiency, independent living, and human rights, especially for disabled people. This foundation is useful for working on gender-based violence since it funds thousands of projects for people with disabilities every year. I would, therefore, like to be a donor to this foundation to take part in this good work.
