It is stated that readmissions are caused in part by the economic status and social level of the patients; is this the case? The readmission rates for post-accident surgical management cases at Vital Community Care in South field, MI will be used to solve this problem. Vital Community Care has a readmission rate of 17 % in 2018 as compared to Michigan’s average of 19% and CMS benchmark range of ≤ 20% percent for post-accident surgical management cases. High readmission rate usually affects hospitals in different ways. A hospital is bound to face penalties for not meeting the CMS requirements in regards to readmission rates ( Ibrahim et al., 2018) . I want to examine the readmission rate for Vital Community Care in Southfield in comparison with the average in Michigan as well as the national average and the requirements that have been outlined by CMS. The analysis will help in understanding the position of the hospital in meeting the compliance requirements. The measures put in place by the CMS in 2012 require companies operating in the USA to prevent some unnecessary hospital readmissions within the first thirty days after the patient has been discharged. Research has pointed out at the connection between poverty and minority status with the risk of being readmitted as some of the individuals are not insured ( Ibrahim et al., 2018; Herrin et al., 2015 ) . This makes it important to analyze the readmission rate of a hospital in line with the socioeconomic status of those it serves in regards to whether they are insured or not. The data collected from the hospital should be compared with the state’s average as well as the standards set by the CMS.
The project helps in adding value to Vital Community Care in Southfield by identifying its position when compared to Michigan’s and national average. Consequently, this project will help in determining if the measures that have been taken by the hospital in reducing readmission rates are working and if there are any improvements needed. The mission of the hospital is to improve the wellbeing of patients and the reduction of readmission rates is one of the measures of the company’s ability to meet its mission. This project aligns with my career goals as it prepares me on how to analyze scientific data to improve the decision making process in the healthcare sector.
