Making Measurement

Summary

According to Reid (2018), precision and accuracy are imperative in any measurement undertaken in the lab. Some of the ways of increasing lab precision include increasing the size of the sample, proper use of equipment, and paying attention to details. Additionally, the equipment must be clean and functioning appropriately to avoid mistakes since errors in the lab make it difficult to replicate lab results.

Vocabulary List

Accuracy-Ascertains that the measurements of the samples are close to the true observation

Precision-Is related to close measurements of the samples are to each other.

Pipette-A device that is used to transfer and measure various liquids in the laboratory

Calibrate-A standard scale

Hypothesis

If the equipment in the lab are not cleaned, the accuracy and precision of the measurement is affected.

The Laboratory

One of the important consideration in regards to lab safety is the dress codes and it ensures that people wear items that would not cause injuries. Acrylic nails, for example, are not permitted in the lab since they are flammable. The other safety requirement involves the use of chemical liquids in the labs. Some of the liquids used in the lab can cause irreversible harms and, hence, it is advisable to exercise caution when distilling or refluxing liquids that are volatile. Additionally, people should not mix chemicals in front of their faces since some of them could have a permanent damage to the eyes (Lab Manager, 2017).

Summary

Vocabulary List

Refluxing-Boil

Distilling-Separating components of a liquid through condensation or boiling

Acrylic nails-artificial

Hypothesis

If lab safety rules are not adhered to, students, researchers, and lab attendant are at a risk of fatal injuries.

Diffusion and Osmosis

Summary

The article states that the cell structure and osmosis, the movement of water molecules from a higher to a lower concentration, are related. The shape of a cell would change due to water movement inside or out of the cell. However, in an instance where the concentration inside and outside the cell, the structure would not be affected, a condition referred to as isotonic. When the concentration outside the cell is more, water would flow from to the surrounding environment causing it to shrink. On the contrary, when the concentration inside the cell is more, water would flow towards the cell causing it to swell, and eventually burst (Nguyen, 2017).

Vocabulary List

Tonicity-the amount of alt in a liquid

Isotonic-a situation solutions have similar osmotic pressure

Hypothesis

If the salt concentration outside a cell varies, the cell structure will change.

Photosynthesis

Summary

The article by David Chandler discusses the role played by photosystem in the process of photosynthesis. A photosystem structure that captures light and it is a combination of chlorophyll. The captured light is used for energizing electrons which later yield the process of photosynthesis. There are two categories of photosystem and they include photosystem 1 and 2. Plants contains photosystem 1 and 2 while bacteria have photosynthesis 2 only. The photosystem is located in the chloroplast in the thykoloid section (Chandler, 2017).

Vocabulary List

Photophosphorylation-The process that lead to the creation of compounds inside a plant by using light energy.

Chlorophyll-The green pigment in plants

Chloroplast-Plant cells in which photosynthesis is conducted

Hypothesis

If the chloroplast of a plant is damaged, photosynthesis process would not occur.
