The idea of national culture asserts that a population of people within a sovereign nation has similar sets of behaviors, norms, customs, and even beliefs. It further adds that culture gives a unique identity to people living in a given country. It is however imperative to note that the concept of national culture has since been challenged with the idea of cultural diversity with the same country. However, proponents of the idea of a national culture have asserted that there is a dominant culture in each nation that can be used as a tool of identity with which nations can be differentiated. Each nation has a dominant culture that is adhered to by a majority of its population, but this does not necessarily mean that it is the sole tool of identity. Embracing the idea of national culture promotes unity and might also be important in international relations such as business, in predicting customer behavior. However, Atkinson (2006) asserted that the shortcomings include the fact that it does not promote diversity and also attempts to silence the voice of the minority groups.

Diane Goldstein’s article gives insights on the public’s continued belief in the supernatural phenomena. It asserts how supernatural phenomena such as ghosts are widely represented in the modern culture in areas such as commerce and entertainment (Goldstein et al. 2007). The reason as to why ghost stories have remained popular in literature and entertainment is the fact that they contain a certain form of misery and violence that resonates well with the audience which includes the children and teenagers. An example of such a film that combines supernatural tendencies, misery, and violence is ‘’The Slasher.’’

The ghost story represented by Virginia Wolf in her text ‘'A Haunted House'' is atypical of most ghost storylines which are based on happy emotions, unlike most stories which are premised on violence and sad affairs. The ghosts in the book are understood to move from room to room in search of their treasure which is a depiction of the happy memories they initially had ( Woolf & Woolf, 2015). Most of them are based on sad tales of lives lost soon or the representation of haunting spirits which are eye-catching and elicit the emotions of the viewers or audience.
