Antibiotic resistance poses a huge and urgent threat to public health. Antibiotic resistance often occurs when bacteria become resistant and develop the capacity to defeat drugs meant to kill them. Antibiotics play a critical role in saving lives and relieving humans of some conditions, like headaches. Despite the numerous benefits, antibiotics have side effects, particularly due to antibiotic resistance. Due to the side effects, doctors should not continue to prescribe antibiotics when there is a low likelihood of illness or death as it results in antibiotic resistance, which has numerous adverse effects.

Antibiotic resistance makes the treatment of some conditions hard. Continued administration of antibiotics is a major problem for human health. According to the CDC (2020), antibiotic resistance has evolved to become the biggest threat in public health. After the development of antibiotic resistance, the treatment of diseases becomes harder. The bacteria are often resistant to the medicine that treated them and multiply to produce more resistant bacteria. The resistance of the bacteria demands a different approach to be taken against the disease, which complicates the treatment process since a different medicine is required.

Antibiotic resistance results in higher medical costs and a longer hospital stay for patients. When diseases in individuals cannot be treated using normal medication, costlier medicine may be used. The application of expensive drugs to treat normal conditions increases healthcare costs, which is a financial burden to the patients and their families. In addition, it may prolong hospital stays to patients, as the doctors may take a longer time to determine a treatment for a patient. Additionally, antibiotic resistance is a threat to modern medicine practices (WHO, 2018). Performing procedures, such as cesarean section without antibiotics, increases the health risks to the patient.

Conclusively, the application of antibiotics has posed a health problem, and doctors should avoid prescribing them to patients without serious health issues due to their adverse effects. Continued use of antibiotics causes bacteria to become resistant to antibiotics. Antibiotic resistance makes the treatment of some conditions hard, increases medical cost, and increases risks when performing procedures, such as caesarian section. The government should adopt policies that control the use of antibiotics to control this problem.
