Issue description

Obesity has turned out to be one of the significant health problems in the United States. The disease affects an individual’s metabolic, psychological, and physical health. For instance, Type 2 diabetes, stroke, certain cancer types, and heart disease are some of the conditions related to obesity. Such conditions can cause premature deaths that could be prevented. According to Gonzalez (2019), approximately 35% of America citizens are obese. However, this percentage is spread across all states. Research conducted indicated that each State had more than 20% obesity prevalence in 2013. Additionally, the study further showed that Hispanic, black woman have 30.7% risk of being obese, while non-Hispanic black women have 41.9%. Also, middle-aged adults of between 40 to 59 years have a 39.5% prevailing rate, 30.3% for those aged between 20 to 39 years, and 35.4 % for those aged 60 years and above (Gonzalez, 2019). Comparatively, middle-aged adults are the most affected than both the young and the old. Unquestionably, an obesity control measure is essential to address the health issue in question.

How to address the obesity health issue

Obesity can be prevented and treated for those who are already suffering from the disease. For instance, when infants are breastfed for a more extended period, they are less likely to become overweight. During the childhood and adolescent age, obesity can be prevented by having good eating habits, eating healthy meals, and taking part in physical activities. Also, drinking water instead of sugar added beverages is equally helpful (Stanford Health Care, n.d). However, adults are advised to use strategies that lead to successful weight loss and maintain their status. Frequent eating of fruits and vegetables, increasing physical activities partaken, and consuming a balanced diet are some of the strategies used. Also, such approaches are also helpful to those suffering from the disease.

For this problem to be solved, several stakeholders need to be involved. First, individuals must be willing to prevent or cure the disease. They should decide to improve their eating habits, eating healthy meals, and taking physical exercises. Similarly, communities should also be involved in the fight against obesity. They should provide vegetables, and fresh fruits stand in different places such as workplaces. Additionally, the government, in conjunction with the ministry of health, should also be involved in setting up policies that can eradicate and prevent obesity (Martinac, 2017). The government can control and ensure that food sold to consumers is healthy; thus cannot lead to obesity. Despite the obesity treatment and prevention being an expensive exercise, it is essential to society. Therefore, institutions dedicated to securing a healthy nation should support the initiative. The ministry of health, governmental, and non-governmental organizations should take part in gathering the necessary resources.
