The article, “The Role of Data, Analytics, and Insights in Health Care” by Jeff Hewitt discusses about the application of digital data in healthcare. From the article, I have learnt that despite the rapid growth of digital data universe. Evidence reveal that digital data enables us to have an understanding regarding the cost of care. Electronic health records have shown to play a critical role in improving quality of care within the healthcare system. However, the adoption of digital data in healthcare is not as fast as expected. The slow change in healthcare has been facilitated by various factors such as difficulties in communicating important insights, lack of effective tools for interpreting, and the huge amount of time required to collect and clean data. The barriers to adoption of digital data include large of collecting data from a larger sample that would provide significant outcomes. Moreover, I have learnt that technological advancement facilitate significant change and it is important for healthcare to invest more aggressively in digital data in order to have a competitive advantage. Therefore, there is need for having understanding of the pace of technological change in order to compete effectively and deliver quality services (Hewitt, 2016).
The five lessons I have learned from data analytics in other industries such as blockchain can play a significant role in informing the data analytics in healthcare. These include analytics can used to assist in cutting on administrative costs, to support clinical decision, minimizing abuse and fraud, and to improve the wellness of patient. These aspects offer the skills required to incorporate and utilize analytics systems as well as the required procedures to manage the systems of health information ( Groves, Kayyali, Knott & Kuiken, 2016). Therefore, the use of data analytics would contribute significantly towards improving delivery of quality services and performance of the health care systems.
