The Silent Child
Vanessa Montalvo, the production designer, played a vital role in translating the script into a visual form. She was responsible for creating the film’s storyboards, which acted as a visual representation during the modernization and modification of "The Silent Child." Vanessa was also the cinematographer, and she was tasked with capturing the script of "The Silent Child” into a film. Vanessa is a master when it comes to lighting. In the living room, when Esmeralda and Soraya are a conversation on how to help Lisandra, she makes use of the natural light coming from the window Vanessa modified the light that was available in the room by using bounce boards to reflect the light on this scene to enhance and create the tone, and mood based on the in-depth conversation and thought that Esmeralda and Soraya were having. There were other roles as well, such as the costume designer, director, and screenwriter among others that worked together seamlessly to make the film making process authentic, fun and simple.
"The Silent Child" is centered on a low-income family of Hispanic origin. According to statistics provided by Pew Research, the Latino people are the largest minority groups in the United States. The set design and costume design used in the film for the first scene helped in bringing to light Esmeralda’s character. Hispanic communities in the United States experience issues in education as well as adequate funding for schools and disadvantaged students. Through education and support from her family members, Esmeralda is breaking the ice ceiling in education by the fact that she learned sign language as a third language, and she is currently pursuing an engineering degree at the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. The set design also helps in solidifying the fact that Soraya comes from a low-income family as they are caught in between a rock and a hard place on deciding whether Lisandra should learn lip-reading or sign language or both. In the dining room Scene, the heated conversation between Pablo and Soraya indicated that they are having difficulties in understanding Lisandra as there is a communication barrier among them.

"The Silent Child" is a film whose focus is on Lisandra, a deaf child whose family is unable to make the right judgment based on her condition. Since Lisandra is unable to speak and hear, she is in a position where she is not able to defend herself or even decide on what is best for her. Soraya and Esmeralda have Lisandra’s best interests at heart, even though they are caught up with busy schedules, and they can make up time for each other. Although Pablo and Paloma are concerned about Lisandra’s condition, they are not concerned with her physical and emotional development, although they want to be able to communicate with her.
"The Silent Child" helps to put into perspective the different roles that family, friends, and the community should play despite our status in the social ladder in addressing the concerns of people with disabilities. Regardless of their busy schedules, Pablo, Paloma, Sebastian, and Soraya are not in a position to understand the predicament that Lisandra is experiencing. This is why Lisandra wipes off the kiss given to her by Soraya. Because Esmeralda understands Lisandra and has her best interests at heart, Lisandra wants to go on holiday with Esmeralda. A family plays a vital role in the molding of a child’s physical, emotional, and social wellbeing. Regardless of our busy schedules, economic status, and school of thought, we must always create quality time for children with disabilities in bringing them up in a caring, loving, and nurturing environment where their interests are fulfilled.
