One of the cases in the past two years that have caught global attention is the infamous arrest and ongoing prosecution of El Chapo, one of the notorious Mexican drug lords, in the U.S. Joaquin Guzman, commonly known by many as El Chapo, was in previously arrested and sentenced in Mexico but managed to escape. In the U.S., El Chapo is indicted for leading a range of criminal activities, including supplying cocaine and drug paraphernalia, laundering the proceeds of drugs, and many others. His seventeen-count accusation in the U.S., together with others that spreads over several decades, is based on the previous claim that El Chapo has been shipping several tons of illegal drugs to the country from South American, and then illegitimately transferred several billions of dollars in proceeds to Mexico. El Chapo is one of the high profile drug traffickers besides Escobar that have in the past caught the attention of the country's political and judicial circles (Kennedy, 2018).

Several social conditions surround the whole topic of drug trafficking and use in society, especially in Mexico and America. Ideally and the most widely documented is the fact that an increase in drug supply in the community is associated with higher substance abuse and addiction. According to the U.S. Department of Justice (2010), drug trafficking and use in the country affects roughly all aspects of lives, with the cost implications approaching $215 billion annually. This burden is reflected in the strained judicial system, overstressed healthcare framework, reduced productivity, and depleted environment. The overuse of drugs is also associated with amplified levels of crime, uncontrolled school dropout, and poverty.
