LA Confidential is a movie based on the third of four novels by James Elroy, hinged on the epigraph ‘a glory that costs everything but means nothing’. It is a story of a group of police officers in the 1950s, who become mixed up in a myriad of illegal activities including prostitution, corruption, organized crime and drug trafficking. Based on the three protagonist officers, the story unravels showing how they put their differences aside to unravel the conspiracy within their police department. This paper analyzes the extent of the truth of corruption as depicted in the film.

Concerning the accuracy of the things displayed and discussed in the novel, it is notable that the movie is classified as a neo-noir movie – a genre that represents the earlier film noir, only with updated contexts and themes. Film noir movies would express something sinister, such as crime dramas, setting them in their original contexts within the 1940s and 1950s. However, neo-noirs would update their contexts to incorporate a new content and style. As a result, this goes to show the accuracy of the events being depicted within the movie (Lyttelton, 2012).

Furthermore, the movie depicts real-life events that occurred in recorded history as background for the setting of the movie. Events such as the death of Buzz Meeks are reflected alongside the love triangle between Inez Soto, Bud and Ed Exley. While the movie might have changed some things to establish a better script, much of the movie’s events remain the same in the book, which reflected the reality on the ground. As a result, it is a depiction of the accurate picture on the ground.

In conclusion, LA Confidential can be seen as an accurate depiction of the situation on the ground, perhaps with only minor additions. This is because of the film category, which essentially represents dark reality movies as well as the use of real-life events as the basis for the movie setting in a majority of its setting.
