Leadership is pivotal in management because it maximizes efficiency, this helps organizations to achieve their goals. By their strong human relations, leaders can motivate team players to achieve a higher level of performance; therefore, managers and team leaders need to have strong leadership characteristics. In the hospital scenario, two workgroups managed by Rachel and Tomas are created to improve efficiency in the healthcare facility. The two groups will focus on specific projects using different leadership theories which the managers will decide to use. Rachel applies the transactional model of leadership while Tomas uses the situational leadership strategy. The performances of the projects will be measured through the following metrics: efficiency outcomes, survey results, and resource expenditures.

Transactional leadership is a supervision type of leadership where team players are rewarded for their performance; the rewards aim to motivate the employees (Bhatta & Sumi, 2018). In this model of leadership, the leader focuses on the organization of the team, supervision of team members, and the performance of the group members. Rachel’s organization of the group is based upon demonstration of leadership abilities and a desire to succeed. Her idea to reward individuals displaying enthusiastic traits with leadership positions was meant to motivate the team players. However, not all employees were motivated by her approach as others believed that you had to be her favorite to be rewarded. This type of leadership is advantageous when rewards motivate employees to increase productivity. The disadvantage of this approach is that sometimes managers become insensitive to the team members and focus on the teams' target and fail to recognize team members’ contributions.

In the situational model of leadership, there is no specific style of leadership; the manager uses the best strategy for each task. According to Bhatta and Sumi (2018), the most effective leaders are those that are capable of adjusting their managing strategies to the current situation to get the job done. There are four leadership techniques in the situational model; telling, selling, participating, and delegating (Bhatta & Sumi, 2018). In Tomas’ strategic meeting with the team members of his group that lasted a full day, he described the new team’s organization as a group of interdependent people working toward a common goal. In this description, the manager offered less direction and allowed the members to participate more in coming up with ideas and making decisions; this is the participating technique in the situational model of leadership. Team members in this group met the approach with mixed feelings; others were enthused by the vision while others were disappointed that there were no leadership positions to work towards. If successful, this model promotes efficiency and it also boosts the morale of the group members. Its main disadvantage is coordination troubles due to disagreeing members.

Transformational leadership is a leadership style that inspires positive change among group members. Leaders and managers using this theory can communicate a vivid vision of the group’s goals which inspires the employees to strive towards the goals (Bhatta & Sumi, 2018). By leaders applying this approach in healthcare facilities, healthcare givers will be able to face drastic changes in the hospital and will be able to cope with difficult situations in the workplace. However, while implementing this strategy, managers in the healthcare facilities have to be careful to avoid risks of poor results from the theory. Leaders that successfully implement this strategy see their organizations improve efficiency and reach their targets.
