The American Military forces have proven not only crucial to the country but also the security welfare of the world in its entirety. Military involvement has proven fundamental especially when aggressive and autocratic government officials attempt to deny citizens some of the most unalienable human rights. Furthermore, the military has proven vital in protecting citizens from irrational extremists such as terrorists whose aim is to launch massacre and atrocities on innocent citizens. The constant engagement of the United States in matters of global relations has earned the nation the "policeman" tag. In its bid to implement international security, it has employed certain guidelines and military battles to restore peace in war-torn countries. The American "policing" role has been exercised primarily to protect vulnerable peoples and regions from powerful oppressors or regional chaos, as illustrated by recent events as well as earlier ones.

The Cold War

The Cold War was an ideological conflict that started in 1945 and went through to around 1991. It pitted two superpowers in the US and the Soviet Union engaging in a proxy war. The Soviet Union supported communism while the US favored a capitalist system. Although the two forces did not participate in a military conflict, the respective countries that employed their ideologies fought. However, it remains fundamental to note that during this time, America provided military aid and in some instances engaged directly in the proxy wars against sides supporting the Soviet Union. The eventual collapse of the Soviet Union and reunification of Germany led to global peace and an end to the Cold War in 1991 ( The US Victory in the Cold War: Economic Strength, Foreign Policy Triumph or Both? 2010).

Civil War in the Dominican Republic

The Dominican Civil War was fought in 1945. The main aim of the US's military intervention has always been to protect the interests of ordinary civilians. The involvement of the US in the 1965 Dominican Civil War was aimed at protecting the lives of innocent individuals and property damage that could have resulted from the Dominican revolt. The involvement of the Organization of American States (OAS) ensured that the situation came under control leading to a prevention of violence.

The Invasion of Panama

President George H.W Bush in 1989 instructed about 27,000 US troops to invade Panama in what was referred to as the “Operation Just Case." The attack aimed to arrest a drug lord known as Manuel Noriega who had been accused of drug trafficking. The first duty that the military ensured was the protection of innocent Americans living in Panama that amounted to about 35,000 (G. H. W. Bush. March 6, 1991. Address before a Joint Session of the Congress on the Cessation of the Persian Gulf Conflict).

War in Afghanistan

On September 11, 2001, the US faced one of the most brutal terror attacks from a terrorist group spearheaded by the AL Qaeda under the leadership of Osama Bin Laden. The attacks that were launched on different parts of the country led to the death of more than 3000 people ( Schultz, 2018). President Bush promised revenge that would see the annihilation of the al Qaeda and the arrest of its leader. It was in this regard that President Bush launched Operation Enduring Freedom after the Taliban refused to surrender the prime suspect; Osama Bin Laden. As a result, military forces were sent to Afghan in a bid to protect the innocent citizens and overturn the Taliban.

The war in Afghan 2008-2009

In 2008, America continued with a string of attacks on the Taliban after previously failed attempts. The Taliban also retaliated by adding more troops to the war. When President Obama assumed office, he added the number of soldiers in Afghanistan to 68,000. This endeavor aimed to stop the Taliban and enforce the Afghanistan establishments. After the death of Osama in 2011, the subsequent administration headed by Trump is determined to add forces to Afghanistan and restore order from the actions of the Taliban and ISIS (North, Barney, & Pollio, 2015).

Claiming that the US has not acted as global police would be false because without its intervention as seen, many ordinary citizens would have faced violence and death from irresponsible leaders. Furthermore, the US aims at restoring a sense of democracy, especially when dealing with Arab countries which have long believed in autocracy.

The military personnel in the US have paid the ultimate price to ensure that people live a desirable life. Their sacrifice and dedication cannot be matched with any other. I desire to become a politician in the future and part of my role would be to influence policy. As such, it will sometimes call on me to launch aggressiveness as a way of enhancing a long-term peace and benefit in different spheres. I will be drawing inspiration from the military which has used its superpower status to strengthen global peace and well-being.
